Hi there - I am looking for some advice for an in-air adapter that will work with the Empower in-seat connection on an upcoming BA flight for my Dell latitude D610 laptop. Anyone on here got a similar make that can advise on this?

Another option would be to get an iGo charger with the appropriate tip, you'll need tip S20, check out www.igo.com and see if you find a charger you like...

The iGO will power the Dells, but not charge them.

Same goes for pretty much any adapter for this laptop, since it is a 95watt device and Empower only delivers 75watts max.

I had the same problem a few months ago with Dell Latitude D610. I have an old "universal" AC/DC charger that doesn't have tips that charge the Dell. I purchased the Dell model and it works well. I keep my original AC adapter plugged in a work and my AC/DC model in the bag with the laptop. I use it at home and in hotels on AC and in the car on DC. I haven't been on a plane with the power port since I got it but I'm sure it will work well. It comes in a zippered pouch that keeps the parts from getting lost (a BIG bonus :D ) and has very sturdy (and large) connectors that should last as long as the laptop. It has a large number of approvals (UL, CSA and several international) so It has been thoroughly tested.

I use the Dell and it powers and charges my machine while plugged in on AA. I haven't tried it on an Empower outlet yet. I'm happy with it, especially since someone in out IT department included it with my machine and none of my peers got one. Mistake? Not for me!

I use this with a Dell M20 which is basically the same laptop as the D610. It's worked for me on both AA and UA.

While the page that ScottC references doesn't state that the D610 works with the adaptor it does. Here's a more detailed page for the same adaptor ... of course in Dell's infinite wisdom, it doesn't contain a link to purchase the adaptor ... Thanks to all for the info. Have decided to go with the Dell power adapter as it looks like it does everything i'm after, and we get a good discount from Dell :).

My Kensington 120 watt will not power my HP zd7000 off emPower on UA (draws too much juice), but it will charge it (when in standby or off). Also, depending on how lightly loaded the machine is (and it has to be insanely lightly-loaded), it can power itself off the battery while the adapter recharges it.

So usually I keep it in when watching DVDs then put it in standby and put my meal tray over it and let it charge up while I eat.

With my Dell Latitude D600, I use a $40 XPower by Xantrex pocket inverter 100 (bought at Fry's). It has an AC outlet and a USB charging port. It has an Empower and cig lighter adapter.

It's not the Empower power rating.... it's the iGO interacting with the Dell. Dell included some circuitry in their chargers a while back so that the laptop can tell if it's a real Dell charger, and refuses to recharge if it isn't.

iGO support confirmed this for me. Dell has yet to answer my email.

This is true -- which is why I went with the Xantrex solution, which does charge AND is less expensive than either IGO or Dell.

I was reading through the posts in this thread and some other posters had mentioned that the Dell D610 uses a 75W adapter. I'm looking at the one I have currently and it's listed as a 65W AC adapter with output 19.5V 3.34A.

Besides the adapter that's sold on the Dell accessories website is there any way I can just buy a cable that can be plugged into my current adapter? My current adapter is the OEM Dell model and you can remove the cable with the wall plug from the adapter. I figure it would be cheaper to buy just a cable with an Empower plug.

No, as the adapter requires 110v to function. It does not accept the 12v (IIRC) output by EmPower or AA sockets. You still must either have an inverter or an auto/air adapter.

Thanks for the clarification. I will look into the cheapest way to buy the Dell adapter in that case.

I also have a Dell and power adapters are hard to find. I bought an APC empower adaptor. It has an empower plug and the box is an invertor, making 110V. That way I can run any 110V device I want to, and it'll work on my next laptop as well.

Will this charge the battery on a D610?

You shouldn't be charging the battery - doing so would cause issues for the EmPower system - including possibly it going out of service.

Just reading through this thread to hopefully find my answer. Not sure if I did or not, if you want the truth! I'm afraid I waited too long to make my purchase.

Monday, I depart on a trans atlantic on UA. Want to make sure I have a proper power adaptor for em power for my laptop (Dell). I figured I'd just be able to go to Radio Shack or Office Max and get what I needed. I'm getting the feeling that is not the case. What do I require for powering up my laptop on UA?
