I was thinking of the Marriott (http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/MELMC) for a 1-day stay as I'll be transiting ... do folks have any other suggestions?

Cheers!

Many rock stars, celebs, tennis players at the Aust Open prefer this boutique hotel

I haven't stayed there since the rebranding, but when it was "Rockman's" it was my hotel of choice when in MEL.

Now I've been converted to the Sofitel (for late arrivals or extended stays) - directly across the road from the Melbourne Club (great for overnight or outstanding dining, but you must be a member of a reciprocal club).

Sofitel has a tramstop on the front doorstep, a 7/11 two doors down from the entrance, and a world of dining options. The rooms one level up from the povo pack ("deluxe") have plasma tellies, surround sound, and a nifty set up that lets you plug your laptop into the plasma & speaker system, so you can keep up with the latest episode of BSG downloaded from the 'net. :p

I don't rate the como - the tosser factor is way too high, and what the hell am I supposed to do with a rubber duck? If I want company in the bath, I'd prefer a pair of teenage bi-sexual gymnasts.

Or some toy battleships.

Or both......coooooool........

But I digress.

The como is a fair hike from the CBD (can't walk it), but is surrounded by some decent restaurants and boutique shopping zones. A fine place for B-grade celebrity spotting if that's your poison - but the Sofitel gets my vote.

Can't go past the Marriot or Sofitel then - the Marriot has an edge if you want a pool (small plunge pool on the ground floor, near the gym). Heated, indoor. It's a mild walk (5-10 minutes) to the centre of the city shopping district.

The hotel restaurant used to be french-themed, but as I said I haven't stayed there for 4-5 years, so no doubt the website will give you the latest.

If you like steak, head to Squire's Loft (concierge will direct you) in the CBD - great stuff. Or get a cab to Southbank near Crown Casino, and take your pick.

Chinese fanatics will recommend "Flower Drum", but I don't pay it - Chinese food is way too greasy for me, and I'm with Prince Philip:

"If it's got 4 legs, and it's not a table; if it swims and it's not a submarine; if it has wings and it's not an aeroplane; then there's a bloody good chance the Chinese will eat it."
