Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - Cancelling an Asia Miles reward on BA metal?

Greetings from the Great White North.

I am considering joining Asia Miles, as I have a bunch of Amex MR points burning a hole in my pocket (and AC isn't that attractive option at the moment).

One of the reasons for liking Asia Miles is that you can book a J reward (YYZ-LHR) on BA metal for 60K points. The same reward flight booked through the BA Exec Club is 100K points.

However, one of the things I can't seem to find out is what happens if I had to cancel such a reward (ie one booked through Asia Miles). The web site seems to indicate that you don't get the points back if you cancel, but I may not have read that section correctly. If you book a BA reward flight through the BA Exec Club then you can cancel up to 24hrs before the flight and get your points back for a C$50 charge.

Can anyone shed any light on what happens if you have to cancel an Asia Miles reward flight that is booked on BA metal?

TIA.

Yes, you've read it correctly. All Asiamiles redemptions are non-refundable, unfortunately. You'll get nothing back if you cancel. OTOH, Asiamiles allows you to hold reward bookings for relatively long periods so that you could finalize your travel plan.

I'd like to add to the above.. that ASIAMILES allow you to hold award bookings for some time BEFORE it gets ticketed. Unlike BA where you must issue the booking right away...

Asia Miles also allows you to rebook for another itineray...origin and destination and sometimes even passenger name can be changed...only the travel has be completed within one year of original ticket issue date and the airline cannot change.
And...if the new itinerary costs less miles...the difference is refunded. A lot of potential here!

Uh.. no they don't. Not in my experience with such an award anyway. They 'may' have done a one-off favour but generally you may 'upgrade' to a higher class on the same airline on the same zone award by paying more miles. I've never heard of Asiamiles refunding any miles back on any award.

I concur. What wanaflyforless says matches my experience except the refund - that has never happened to me as a Diamond and I have tried a number of creative ways...

Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate it.

Just so I am clear, but is it correct that if I book an Asia Miles reward on BA Metal I can later (but before the first flight) change origin and destination but have to keep to BA Metal? (And new flights have to be within one year of date of issue of original reward.) Is there a charge for this?

Thanks,

HT

Yes. And yes (US$30 or 3000 AsiaMiles, whichever you choose).

At least, that's my experience as a Diamond.
