Air New Zealand Air Points - Just flew the new Business Prem...Wow!!!......what a disappointment

Flew LAX-AKL-SFO last week in C on the newly, reconfig 747s. Maybe my expectations were too high, but found the entire experience a bit of a let-down.

The seats were fine in the flat mode (although I could swear that when lying flat, one's head is actually lower than one's feet), but not so good in upright (armrests are very narrow, worse than those in Y) and not so good in recline (seat doesn't tilt back very much), making it difficult to relax and watch videos. IFE not turned on until >1 hour into flight -- why can't they at least provide the Airshow during takeoff/landing, or at least immed after/before???? On both flights, they had to keep setting/resetting the system.

IFE is OK, but bloody frustrating to navigate. Screen was already starting to fall apart. Controller unit holder (the little tray that holds it) was broken on the return flight.

The meals were the biggest frustration. No pre-dinner cocktail service (ex-LAX, given the 1130pm departure time, I can understand not doing this, but for an 8pm departure from AKL, there's plenty of time). The tiny appetizer (both ways) consisted of the same item: three cooked shrimps on some shredded greens with oil (mixed with a single drop of vinegar) to pour on top. No second course, but straight into the main (served in a tiny bowl ... portion size equivalent to what would be offered in Y). Small desert was fine and the little wedges of cheese/grapes were fine. The wines were great!!

Cutlery is similar to what one normally finds in an economy class -- very thin metal and tiny tines (sharp part of a fork). Knives are the cheapest possible variety (very flimsy plastic).

Was on the upper deck both directions, so maybe the service is better on the main deck. Inflight snacks consisted of granola bars and some fruit. Noticed the FAs had laid out some bottles of Perrier and the granola bars/fruit in the Prem Econ snack bar area. On both flights, C class got nothing laid out in the C snack bar area.

Catering forgot to cater sleep shades or slippers for the AKL-SFO flight. There's no excuse for that!

The crews were fine, but all in all, I'll take the new QF Skybed and meal services any day! The new NZ C product shouted out "cheap". For a US$7,000 roundtrip, it is a real disappointment.

Wow, that sounds very much like my LH C class experience last week. Inflight entertainment wasn't activated until after dinner (about 2 hours into the flight) both ways and the brand new C class seat fell apart everywhere. Plastic covers were already missing, deep scratches everywhere in the plastic and left over coffe and drink stains all over the food and drink trays! Very disappointing.

My only hope was that the new NZ C class would be better. At least the bed is 100% flat, the LH product was a nightmare. They claim the longest bed in the sky (6'7''), but I'm 6'7'' and there was no way I fit into the seat when it was flat. I had to fold up the footrest to be able to stretch my legs all the way!

Foodwise I've been disappointed on all my recent C and even F trips (BA), too. I think the good old times when they served quality food in premium classes are really over. Very frustrating when you look at the price tag those tickets come with. You would think that there is at least some more room for a decent food service.

I'm sorry to hear of your disappointing trip with Air New Zealand.

Most of those problems you describe seem to be staff training and counter productive cost cutting in catering which can easily be fixed. I’d agree that the meals problem you describe needs to be rectified - did you file a complaint with the FA on both segments ?

With regards to the fixed product did you notice any bumps coming from the nearby seats when the screen/ tray table was used ?

The problems with the IFE seem to keep coming up - I still can't believe they chose something powered by Windows hopefully they’ll iron out the problems more quickly than LH would (being that they still haven’t been fixed by LH, but they have stopped fitting those seats until a solution is found). Maybe the focus group thought that the way it's configured now was the most user friendly. Did you ask the FA if it would be possible to turn on the IFE earlier ?

I generally find that any full fare trip in J/Y on any airline is a disappointment. Perhaps after NZ have made some changes you could try them again.

That really does sound disappointing, especially the food, which has been a core strength of AirNZ for so long. For what it's worth, my only recent premium class experience on NZ (AKL-SYD on a 763 dinner flight) featured some of the best airline food I've ever eaten, especially the main course which was crab and prawn ravioli. Portions were not huge but fine for shorthaul.

The IFE glitches are probably to be expected - almost every airline introducing an AVOD system has had loads of teething problems - but to be so slow to turn the system on is an entirely avoidable frustration.

Great to hear that at least the wines were good... as many here know, that is a subject very close to my heart! :o

You are absolutely correct. The seat is 'flat' and the plane flies at a nose-up of about 3-4 degrees. So technically your head is going to be below your feet.

While not nearly as bad as other so called 'flat' seats that are on a fairly heafty incline (although of course with a flat bed the situation is in reverse of the other flat seats!) the problem you describe is the same as found in most first class 'beds', where the head is below the feet.

The solution however is very simple - just turn around and stick your head on the ottoman / foot stool. I do it and I know many other FTers do as well. The crew don't seem to mind - and I have even seen the odd passenger or two follow my example.

I learnt this from taking the BA flat biz beds and got sat in a rear facing seat one time. It was perfect!

Interesting -- didn't realize the BA C beds also had this flaw. I know that their F seats are actually at a slight angle in order to accomodate the plane's flight angle (i.e., no head rush!) Haven't experience any F bed problems on SQ, CX, QF, QR either.

Don't you find it disconcerting putting your head in such close proximity to all those other feet?!?!?

Hmm - maybe it's just me! I've flown in the F suites on:

BA: turned around
TG: didn't need to
UA: didn't need to
LX: (Swiss) turned around
CX: turned around
UA: didn't need to
QF: turned around

and on Virgin in Upper Class suites - turned around there too... but then I'm fairly particular with sleeping! I also don't like, on BA and QF, the tiny area that they have for your feet (mine end up all crowded together) so helps to turn the other way.

No worries about having my head near others feet... never even thought about it and you're not really that close I guess.

Cheers
