Travel Technology - My recent experiences with 2 prepaid GSM carriers in England

I recently acquired 2 prepaid GSM sims for a trip to London. I thought that I’d share my experiences with the two companies.

About a year ago, I acquired a new (then) O2 sim kit with a phone that I purchased from an English ebay seller. Before this trip, I tried to register it and activate it for use in London last month. O2’s website acted as though the registration process was a success. They posted my £2.50 registration credit to my account. But I just couldn’t seem to login to my account. So I followed O2’s instructions for contacting their agents. I provided all of the typical info (name, address, cell phone number, etc) three times and kept getting the same stupid emails back from them telling me that they can’t find my account! I finally emailed back that they need to manually search for the account and finally got another URL to re-register through. Such a vile and unproductive experience!!

While shopping around, I found that O2 and Orange LOOKED like they charged about £0.19 per minute for calls to the USA. I liked that. Vodafone looked like they charged about 5 times as much. Even though Vodafone is the biggest there, I wanted to save money on cell calls.

Next I found an ebay seller selling preregistered Orange sims with £6 credit preloaded for about US$3.25 delivered. Much to my surprise, my sim arrived only 2 days after the seller airmailed it from England! It included a “top-up card” for me to add credit to the account through countless ATMS and merchants in England. The seller even linked the top-up card to my account so it was ready to go!

Next I tried to link my O2 top-up card to the O2 account. After countless attempts, O2 and I could NOT link it! GRRRRRR.

So on arrival at LHR, I call home with the O2 sim in my phone. But first, O2 wants to reconfigure my phone!!!! I just want to call home! Yes, the call went through, but I find out that they charged about £0.95 per minute!

After I switched over to the Orange sim, everything was smooth. No attempts to reconfigure my phone for me from Orange! I found that the calls to the USA were costing me about £0.19 per minute. And they apparently charge only fractional minutes after the first minute. So a call that lasts 1 minute and 5 seconds only costs about £0.20!

Summary:

I found that O2 was a major pain to deal with. O2’s per minute rates to USA are very high compared to Orange. Although I thought that O2’s network that uses both 900 and 1800 MHz would be superior, it didn’t seem to matter. Sure, O2 has thousnands and thousands of happy prepaid customers. O2 just didn't do it for me.

Orange was easy to deal with and the network was fine for me. I loved the cheap calls to the USA. I also loved to fractional billing, too. The clear winner in my tests. :)

One nice O2 touch:

O2 allows accounts that have low or zero balance to make 2 extra calls to recharge or make “alternate arrangements”. While I was in Belgium, I succeeded in making a call to the USA with the O2 sim, roaming on another network and from another country. Normally, this type of call would cost LD charges back to the UK plus the regular fees from the UK to the USA. But O2 connected the call for FREE since my balance was almost zero! Good show O2!

Next time, I might try Orange and Virgin UK (runs on the T-mobile UK network).

BTW, I have found a guy in London that will pre-register Orange sims, load any value, and airmail them to the USA. Payment via paypal. PM me if you want his email address or telephone number.

If memory serves me correctly, I paid only .10 per minute from the UK to US on my Virgin Mobile SIM last year. I bought the card while in London at Stationary store for £5 with £5 credit and had no problems with top up cards.

I used orange and vodafone, and had no problems with either.

I've used O2 prepaid and found that it was fine most of the time, but that I couldn't get signal in some areas. When I switch back to my Cingular SIM, I would normally get decent signal, usually on T-Mobile. So I guess I'll give virgin a shot next time...

Current rate with O2 PAYG to the USA is 15p per minutes, with the (currently) free international bolt-on registered. Orange PAYG rate is 20p, as is Virgin. Other rates may apply with older cards on earlier tariffs. Per second billing after a minimum chartge is the usual practice in the UK, none of this whole minute stuff.

I am not surprised that using old SIMs that haven't been used for many months can have problems, as it isn't unusual for them to be disconnected.

I have been very pleased with Vodafone. It works everywhere from the UK to Dubai. I only wish Vodafone had more competition in Malta since duopoly pricing here is some of the highest in Europe.

I have Easymobile:
https://www.easymobile.com
They charge 15p per minute to the USA
They're giving you an extra five pounds of calls when you sign up:
https://www.easymobile.com/selfcare/emcontent/about/news.html
You have to spend ten pounds to get the £5 extra free.
If you really want to get more back, buy it through Quidco and get £10 back!

Easymobile charge a service fee of 75p per month if your charges in a 3 month period drop below £5, so it maybe isn't the choice for an infrequent visitor unless it is emptied out. They also charge 25p for online topups and 75p via their customer services, trying to drive you to automatic charges on a credit / debit card.

With Easymopbile, you can top up on the net for free. ther is also an option to autotopup when you're credit falls below £2.

According to their website they charge 25p for a web top up. It may be that this charge was introduced at some stage, and people with SIMs from before that date don't have to pay.

I will study abroad in Holland for approximately five months and want to purchase a prepaid cellular phone. I want something that is efficient, reliable and durable. It seems like Virgin, Easymobile and Orange are best for the UK, but are they the same for all of western Europe?

If you can, please let me know which service is best value for my needs and why you would recommend it. I appreciate any input.

If you will be spending time in both the UK and the Netherlands, I would suggest getting an unlocked 900-1800MHz GSM phone and a prepaid sim for each country.

If you are only spending time in the Netherlands, buy a phone and a Dutch prepaid sim after you arrive there.

If you intend to use the phone in the USA someday, also add 1900 MHz to the phone (US carriers use 1900 and 850 MHz).

BTW, www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_nl.shtml shows the Dutch GSM carriers and their frequencies and coverage.

On second thought, a USA triband GSM phone (like the Nokia 3100b) with 850, 1800, and 1900 might be a good choice if you use a carrier that only uses 1800 MHz in Europe (like Orange NL or Orange UK, or T-Mobile NL)

I have never had a problem with Orange or Voda. Both good.

It has always been 20p per minute, but billed by the second so that brief calls (say those that go to an answering machine) cost less. I sometimes paid only 1 p to call the US for a few seconds. Now Virgin has a 5 p minimum.

It looks like my memory failed me once again. :o
