Succumbing to wife-pressure, I bought an iPod that is now "our" main music player. I remember BMW/iPod commercials last year claiming that the iPod can seamlessly be integrated into later model BMWs.

I called my BMW dealer who said that my car could be fitted for an iPod, but this would be a factory "installation". He wasn't sure if the contraption was ever set up to be "plug and play" - he said something about possible drilling the face plate.

Do I need to have this installed at the dealer? Or did the guy on the phone have no idea what he was talking about???

I certainly would be more confident in letting them install the iPod kit as I am sure they need to work behind the dashboard in order to establish a link to the docking station.

I believe that there are a couple of steps, we are going to do it to ours the next time it's in.

The cables are fairly simple, don't believe that there is any faceplate drilling.

Everything comes through the glove box, and connects to the CD changer (the mucis folders actually appear as the 6 cd's from the changer). You stick the ipod on the cable, leave it in the glove box, and control it from the steering wheel controls.

I don't know if there is any other programming necessary to the electronics or not.

If you don't want the steering wheel controls and all that, there are adapters for the cable ends in the trunk that you can connect it to, snake the wire through to the console, plug your Ipod in and control it from the ipod.

With the BMW solution, the controls on the Ipod will not work, you have to control it through the stereo. Some solutions will let yo uuse both.
