In a couple of weeks, we will be headed to both Kenya (thank you SAF8/Hilton!) and South Africa. My problem is that I have no idea what to take so we will be able to use the pile of gadgets we will be taking with us. I'm guessing we need a surge protector and adapter? I did a search and still couldn't figure out the answer.
Things we will be taking that will need to be charged are:
1) a new powerbook
2) a photo ipod
3) two small digital cameras (not SLRs)
4) a digital SLR
I looked at REI last weekend and the adapters they had in stock specifically said that they were not suitable for use with laptops. I also read on another thread here about the iGo, but at $100+, I don't want to just buy it hoping it's the right thing without getting some advice. My brain is fried with other trip details, and any suggestions would be much appreciated.

To plug your ipod and powerbook into the wall, you just need an adapter like this (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2036266&cp=&kw=travel+adapter&parentPage=search). They both have AC adapters rated for 240v. Your cameras are probably the same - just look at the AC adapter, and make sure it can handle 240v.
Also, don't forget to bring a battery charger if your cameras use AAs. Have fun.

If you are using any regular batteries, take them with you -- they are very expensive in Kenya.
And stuff some ballcaps into your luggage to give to kids and you will have friends for life and smiles a mile wide!

South Africa has unique plugs, however.. just be aware.

Actually, that kit does not appear to contain the required plugs. The OP would need this plug for Kenya: http://kropla.com/!d.htm & this one for South Africa: http://kropla.com/!m.htm
This is assuming that each of your devices has a label that says something like "AC ~ 110-240V". If the label says "AC 120V", you will also need a converter.

Thank you all for your speedy and helpful replies. I'm not used to traveling with nearly this many cords and gadgets, so it is very nice to have people to ask for help who know what all this junk is for!
DallasBill--we were just debating whether to take some White Sox caps, so I think your post will break the stalemate!

I was just in Cape Town and I can confirm that South Africa really does use the plug referenced above. If you don't buy an adapter in advance from a US source such as http://www.walkabouttravelgear.com/c_safr.htm then you can find them in shopping malls when you get there. And maybe your hotel can lend you one.

The plug type literally is called South African type because it was done during apartheid to try and boost domestic production or something horribly stupid like that.
Plug converters are readily available.
