Pre-Wilma, can anyone give me some feedback on quality of accommodations, staff, facilities (pool, fitness center, etc), beach and whether to rent a car or depend on taxiis/buses for a Feb trip.

Lastly, any reports of extent of damage.

Thanks

ThanksThere are several threads discussing car rental/insurance.

If you are staying in Cancun the entire time, no need to rent a car. The buses are color coded, and every hotel has a colored route map. They come along about every 5-10 minites and cost 60 cents/trip. Ms. Galt and I took a taxi (she was wearing heels and a strapless dress) and it cost 8 buck to go 1/2 mile.

If you are going to CZM or Playa del Carmen, take the Ruta 1 bus to the bus station (across the street from the chendrui grocery store--a great place to buy alcohol/snacks) and it's three dollars to PDC. Buses leave about every 10 minutes and are clean and efficient. The ferry to CZM is about $15.00, IIRC. We rented a car to go to Akumal and Tulum and had no problems...the hooror stories you hear are just that, but DO buy the extra insurance anyway.

I posted three e-mails I received from a dive outfitter in the Marriott board. Again, "search" is your friend.

Both hotels damaged. Original reports were that they would be closed to at least year end. IC now due to open in mid-December.

IC more centrally located. Hilton has a couple of excellent restaurants and a nice spa. More reasonably priced. Near Captain's Cove which should be reopened in 2 to 3 months.
