I am spending next weekend in NYC and would like to use points. They have been unavailable for the last month or so but there is available rooms booking directly. Is there a protocol they follow? release rooms 2 days before.etc or am I just out of luck. Thanks for your help

You might get lucky, but in my experience the best time to book award stays with Hilton is pretty well in advance, especially for more popular destinations like NYC.

You didn't mention status but the desk has an amazingly magical ability to pull rooms from a seemingly empty hat.

In my experience, there is no official reward inventory added at the last minute, nor is there a mechanism for doing so. However...
1) I have often succeeded in getting a reward stay by contacting a property directly and speaking with the right person, usually a manager. The basic logic (which you are following already) is that if they know occupancy will be low, why not take the reward revenue?
2) I know someone who will make a standard reservation and show up with a cert. He claims he has never been turned away, but he is also a rather "persuasive" person (pushy, demanding, PITA), and this game of chicken may not be everyone's tea.

I've done five or six award stays in New York in the last two months, and each and every time there was no availability online until the last week or less for the award reservations.
It wasn't the huge of a thing, I would have just driven home those nights, but when the space opened up it was worth the points.
The rooms were at the Embassy, Millenium, and the Waldrof

I have done it numerous times.
It is the luck of the draw.

I booked an award at the Fallsview property in Niagara, ON for this weekend. At the time (a month+), On the Falls had no availablilty (award or paid) acccording to spg.com and CS. I checked again a week ago, rates were shown, so I called SPG and got it changed! I also wondered if a few more rooms were released or there were cancellations, etc.
Good luck with NYC.
Even though it is marathon weekend in NYC I was able to get a room at the Doubletree Metropolitan for the weekend. I called the reservation manager directly and she could not have been nicer.
Thank you all very much for the help
