If contributions to the Starwood Relief Fund are not tax deductible, then the fund is not a charity. Perhaps the oill companies could start a relief fund for their workers displaced from the damaged Gulf of Mexico oil rigs. That sounds like a good cause too. I'll continue to give to real charitable organizations and let Starwood management take care of their own. ;)

They are looking after thier own - you are being invited to participate in an auction where the proceeds are going to Starwood employees that's being organized by Starwood. You'll receive the full benefit of whatever item you buy. I don't see any misrepresentation anywhere in the press release.

Bravo to the company for stepping up and actually doing something for their employees. It's a lot more than I've heard from other organizations who have workers in the area.

Why the sour grapes? :(

yeah, i don't see any misrepresentation here either. you are not making a contribution. you are bidding on items in which you will garner utility (i.e., you will be bidding on items such that you will be enchanging cash for utils/utility units). ;)

starwood is forking over the goods. you are forking over the cash. starwood will use these proceeds for its displaced workers.

you go, starwood.

this is really wonderful. starwood did a great job with this. i will hold my tongue but clearly since this thing is running pretty smoothly they must have brought in an outside vendor to run the thing. i can't imagine the web "gurus" being involved with this one.

i am confused on one item, though. Item Number:1443126 says it is based in Chicago, IL and the link connects to the Westin Chicago River North. But, the item description says:

"Two night stay at Rancho Caymus Inn, Private Tour and Tasting, Lunch on the front lawn for four. Experience the elegance and old-world comfort of Spanish California at Rancho Caymus Inn. Ideally located at Rutherford Square in the heart of Napa Valley, the inn offers lodging in a timeless showplace with 26 inspired rooms full of handcrafted furnishings overlooking a lavishly-flowered courtyard."

1. The news release says all auctions end at midnight on the 27th. But just browsing through some of the items, I saw some with remaining time at 6 days, 15 hours, and others with remaining time at 7 days, 6 hours. I assume the ending time posted with the auction is correct, but is there any reason to think the later-ending auctions will be cut off "prematurely?"

2. The T&C say that hotel stays do not earn Starpoints, but there's no mention of stay/night credits. I assume these are also not awarded, but William, can you offer an official verdict?

3. Interestingly, it seems that these items can be paid for with VISA and Mastercard, but not with the Starwood (or any other) American Express card.

4. Add my kudos to those already expressed to Starwood for a creative and generous way to help out their employees (and promote the brand at the same time!).

Item: 1454814 "Incredible One Week Rental from Royal Aloha Vacations"

The listing states: "This week may used anytime between June 27, 2005 and June 26, 2006."

Since "You'll have the opportunity to bid on extraordinary items from October 20 – 27" and the stay must be Monday to Monday, don't they mean: "This week may used anytime between October 31, 2005 and June 26, 2006"???

no mention is made of shipping costs but the Terms and Conditions say: "Additional fees including, government imposed fees and shipping costs, and additional terms and conditions including, redemption restrictions (e.g., blackout dates), may apply to this item."

so, be careful. the listing really should mention whether shipping is included.

Would have been SWELL ^ if starwood have offered a "cash or points" payment option. IOW, let us choose to pay w/ starpoints or cash. Or would this be a tax nightmare for spg members and for starwood, and/or too cumbersome to manage ?

Just set a reasonable ratio and let us pick the currency.

When I first read the thread title, for some reason I intuitively had a sense this would be a starpoint redemption opportunity, modeled after Continental Airline's Nonepass auction site which allows one to bid using Nonepass miles. Not to be.

Still a super and noble gesture on the part of starwood. !!!

Nice job Starwood :)

This one cracks me up though:

"You and a guest will enjoy a two-night stay in the historic and elegant Presidential Suite at the Palace Hotel and receive 60 Starwood points to be used towards travel. Celebrate your arrival at San Francisco's Grand Dame Hotel with a champagne toast amenity and flowers delivered to your room. Then, get ready for an amazing culinary experience! Executive Chef, Jesse Llapitan will prepare a four course gourmet dinner in your suite and personally select wines to be paired with each course. Remember this fabulous weekend with a very special keepsake gift from the Palace."

Can't wait to redeem those sixty Starpoints for travel! That could get me from Fresno to Merced?

Whereas this is more like it:

Go Starwood. This is excellent. I think some of the opening bids should have been lower--from my experience selling on Ebay it's best to start low and let people get into it. But the main thing is that this is ver generous, well thought out, and includes some tremendous offerings! I hope it does really well.

I don't think the points would have been of much use to the ones who are supposed to benefit from this auction, I don't suppose they're much in the mood for using the points to travel around right now. And I don't think it's fair to expect *wood to cash in the points for you and give out money in exchange for your points seeing that they're already matching the proceeds from the auction out of their own pocket

First, put me on the list of those giving kudos to Starwood.

Second, who writes the descriptions/makes the offers that we are seeing. There are some huge grammar/spelling mistakes in a number of the descriptions, so I'm assuming that, with Justin's departure, some of these are going up without Starwood viewing them. Just curious.

Tyn, you miss my concept. My thought was this would be a way for starwood members to BID POINTS, which starwood ould convert to cash and donate the cash to the cause.

This is the model Continental uses except they *keep* the cash...but they allow Nonepass members to bid nonepass miles and "buy" auction lots.

I realize hurricane victims are not in a mood to travel using donated starpoints, per se. Pardon if I was not clear.

As for not agreeing that the Continental model would also work here, no problem. We disagree. They convert starpoints to internal cash and pay the hotels every day of the year, so the concept is already established, no ? :)

You can avoid the top picture repeating if you go through yahoo to their auction site (http://auctions.yahoo.com/) and then search by the id they're using which is starwood_katrina_relief (http://user.auctions.yahoo.com/user/starwood_katrina_relief) You'll get the list - still 35 pages long, still a mish mash of items but no top half page advertisement.

Since I plan to be in several "unusual" places around the world during the next year, I went to the bidding site hoping to snag some discount travel -- while at the same time helping those affected by the hurricane.

The problem I'm having, however, is that folks are generally bidding WAY too much for the packages offered. I can't fault folks for their generosity -- and it will certainly benefit the affected employees -- but it's making it difficult for those of us more acquainted with "fair value" to bid.

Given this response, maybe Starwood should start a "for profit" bidding site. :)
