Starwood Preferred Guest - Question: Starpoints earning eligibility

I was trying to read through the term and condition of the preferred guest program and had no success in finding answer to my question.....

My friend is coming to visit me and is going to stay at one of the starwood properties in southern california. Now, he obviously made the reservation under his name and will pay with his own credit card. However, I will be staying with him. He is not with the SPG program so he is not going to care about the points. However, because I am a platinum, I obviously want to enjoy my benefits (upgrade, etc) and the points wouldn't hurt. So, my question is, am I eligible to earn starpoints and enjoy my platinum benefits if the reservation is under my friend's name even though I am staying with him? I understand that he could request to add my name to his account. If he did that, am I eligible then?

Why don't you book the reservation under your name and just have him pay assuming you will be there with him???

The bill needs to reflect his name in order for him to be reimbursed.

You can try calling the hotel and add your name to his reservation.

Given that he needs the ultimate bill to reflect his name, there's no way to do this and have you earn points (including the Plat. amenity, if applicable) for the stay to your SPG account.

In terms of an upgrade and on-property benefits though, you could probably have your name added to the reservation and your Platinum number inserted, given that the reservation doesn't currently contain one. When you check in together, give them your credit card and Platinum card (you'll probably have to tell them that the reservation is in both of your names,). At check-out, he could provide his credit card for final payment and ask that your name be deleted from the bill and replaced with his so that he gets the documentation he needs for reimbursement.

This is the only way I can think of to get Platinum stay benefits, but have the final bill reflect his details.
