Today I was booking a trans-tasman itinerary and noticed a rather large price difference between the .com and .co.nz versions of NZ's web site.

After taxes are included, the canadian site, which uses the itn.net booking engine and quotes in CAD came out significantly cheaper than the NZ site quoting in NZD - same flights, same booking classes, etc.

Example: ZQN-SYD departing 3/1 on NZ231 returning 7/1 on NZ232

On Airnz.co.nz:
1 Adult fare(s) @ NZD $584.00 NZD $584.00
Total taxes, levies & surcharges - Detail NZD $219.71
Total NZD $803.71

On Airnz.com:
Base Airfare (excluding taxes) NZD 718.70 (Adult)
Total Taxes CAD 79.58
Total Airfare (including taxes) CAD 567.58

CAD$567 is really about NZD$706. Is Air NZ trying to rip off the locals or is their currency conversion messed up?

In July of this year I booked on NZ doing the same thing it looks like you've done. The .com site was a much cheaper ticket so I booked that way and didn't have any problems. The best part was it let me select seats on the .com site. I dont' think you can select seats on the .co.nz site.

Not an answer to your question, but just confirming that I have seen the same thing. I have checked other times and the price is almost the same. Not exactly sure what is going on or why it happens.

What Fare class of Ticket ? (Tasman Fare Saver - Tasman Flexi saver - Tasman Flexi ). Fares can change in minutes

Look on the Air NZ Oz web site http://www.airnz.com.au/ and you will may get a differnt answer again.

It could be the the US site is not charging NZ 12.5% GST

I have noticed before that pricing (& purchasing) as 2 one way flights from NZ & Aust respectivley can result in savings (same happens with QF)

These were definitely for the same booking classes (on itn.net you can see whether its SMART, SAVER, etc by clicking on the fare rules). I looked at a few different trans-tasman itinerarys and the .com was cheaper by a similar margin on all of them.

I didn't think of the GST thing - but I would have thought GST would not be applicable to international flights?

GST is applicable if purchased in NZ. Looks like thats the answer.

BTW the categories (saver, flexi, etc) cover several fares so not necessarily getting the exact same booking class.

GST is not applicable to international tickets purchased in New Zealand. International travel is classed as an export.
