In an announcement to the Tel Aviv stock exchange, LY has announced it is buying two 772s for $246M. This is two replace the two very old 742s they have used for too ma years. No affiditional capacity increase in the near future.

Well, 2x777 is actually less capacity than 2x742 ...

Well, they are doing the best they can to make money - limiting the market capacity as demand increases leads to higher prices. This is at least what I learned in economics class. Since the Israeli civil aviation authority works for them - they may get away with it. There is one thing worse than a monopoly owned by the government - a monopoly owned by the private sector.
I think the Israeli market can forget about $300 to western europe, $500 to NY and $750 to the west coast for now.
I have my own "boycott" on LY - as long as the competition is not AZ, I'll take the competition.

Except Sun D'or charters to Turkey - I haven't been on an LY plane in 6 years and running :)
Some cacpacity will come from nonstop DL flights from ATL this spring. I think EL AL will have a codeshare code.
BTW - Just for the record flights to TLV from NY are alreday booked for hanukkah and Passover. Only holiday seats are for $1600+ in economy.
It will actually add capacity in the winter when the 747-200 are used as cargo.
It the meantime LY is still shopping for a/c to lease.
