Would it be possible for me to book a suv w/ neverlost (in hopes to be upgraded to a navigator, for example) and when getting to the counter, to change my mind and not want the neverlost anymore (thus removing the $10/day charge), but keeping the navigator?

It would probably depend on who's at the counter -- there's been a few times (when hertz.com was having problems) where I've gotten Neverlost cars without reserving them, and the agent promptly removed the charge, no questions asked, and let me keep the car. ^ On the other hand, there have been a few times when I've gotten nice complimentary upgrades with Neverlost (again, without me requesting it), and the agent immediately "downgraded" me into something without it. :td:

sounds like a personal ethics question more than a hertz procedures question

Personally, $10 is a small price to pay to get upgraded to a Navigator. :p

That being said, don't be surprised to see an Explorer with NL. So far my last three NL full-size rentals (as a PC) have been Ford 500s (an SEL in DEN and a stripper in SEA) or the Mercury version - the Montegro (this weekend in ALB). In all three cases, my other choice offered by the agent was an Explorer with NL, but the 500/Montegro gets better mileage and handles better, so I stick with them.

If there are ANY other SUVs on the lot, they're going to plunk you in one of those and not give you the Navigator. a) they want the $10 a day for Neverlost and will save the vehicle with it in the hope that another customer wants it and is willing to pay for it and b) they're going to bend over backwards to screw you for being fickle.

Had a similar scenario on saturday needed neverlost, they were going to give me the navigator for $50 more a day. I was already paying $50.99 a day for my towncar, I passed.
AFAIK the Navigator isn't an easy upgrade in a city.

I had a Neverlost this week in SAV. The results whenever I used the Yellow Pages selection were quite funny.

Barnes and Noble? How about 1100 miles away in BOS.

Yeah, the yellow pages are completely non-functional. I was in NJ last week with a Neverlost and looked up Trader Joe's, and was given a location about 30 miles from my parents in CA (2800+ miles from here) as the closest. I called my mom and had a good laugh. That said, the maps and driving directions are decent, so it really depends what you need.

Yes, the NeverLost seems to be very hit or miss. I have gotten severely lost several times when depending on it, but I never seem to learn my lessons.

I am "that guy" who bumbles around while Nora Neverlost (that's my name for her) keeps telling me to "proceed to the highlighted route" and "U-Turn in... point five miles."

I rented a vehicle w/NeverLost ages and ages ago. I got lost and vowed never to get another one.

So, far, armed with maps, I do more than alright.

Me and my SO (who has the worst sense of direction) got NeverLost as an upgrade at DFW to drive around Texas. We loved every minute of it - both Yellow pages and addresses. It was actually a lot of fun having it!

Had a Toyota Corolla this past weekend in LAX (10/7 - 10/10) - with Neverlost - very cool system and I'm thinking about getting one of those GPS systems for my own car.

make sure you get a GPS system that updates maps more than every three years.
