This was a tough one--started at $25 and worked up, adding all the mid-town zones one by one. I really wanted the airport area. The key to remember-- the City is almost always higher than SFO or SSF, so you are pretty safe to add them and stay at 4, 3 or even 2.5 stars whilst bidding low.
Best!

The SFO Sheraton is nice but nowhere near as good as they SFO Hyatt.

So? I would not like to see this becoming a place where people start posting their winning bids. I would encourage you to post either www.betterbidding.com or www.biddingfortravel.com. The latter has banned quite a few active FlyerTalkers so I would personally choose the first option.
Posters at both BFT and BetterBidding are reporting Priceline has upgraded both the SFO Hyatt & Sheraton (SFO airport zone) from 3 to 4 stars.
That's another loss of a free rebid at the 4 star level for downtown SF stays (Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf was upgraded 3 to 4 stars a few months ago).
And it's a gain for Priceline airport hotel users who don't care for either the 3* Doubletree or Holiday Inn (or both!).

I personally hated the SFO Hyatt and will never stay there again (this coming from a Hyatt Diamond). I would personally dout the Sheraton to be any worse, although I've never stayed there. And if the SFO Hyatt is 4 stars... well God help us all. That just goes to show you can make anything 4 stars...

I've stayed at both properties. Although the Sheraton appears a more dated property than Hyatt, if I had my choice, I'd probably go with Sheraton. Reasons are the Heavenly Beds, closer proximity to the Bay (great walking trails along the water), and adjacent Kincaid's Restaurant.
Although this upgrading by Priceline makes the zone more user friendly to those wishing to avoid either Doubletree or Holiday Inn, I seriously doubt Hyatt or Sheraton have both coincidentally made amenity changes that would explain the upgraded rating. In other words, what differentiation is there between Priceline 3 and 4 star properties. If I bid a 4 star property, I expect the hotel to offer more amenties than a 3 star. Show me what added amenities both Sheraton & Hyatt offer in this zone, now that they're rated 4 stars, over the 3 star SFO Marriott.

By the way is it really true that PL will not accept a bid lower than $40 for a 4*, period?

Yes.
If you bid anything under $40 for a 4 star hotel, it will automatically be rejected. Even if the 4* hotel has a Priceline rate less than $40. The only way to circumvent this is to bid 3* and HOPE for an upgrade to 4*. Of course if the zone you're bidding has a history of 3* hotels accepting bids of under $40 you don't want to go this route. Not recommended!
By the way, the minimum bid amount for 3* is $25.

Thanks,
Was rejected at $40 and accepted at $42 for SFO Hyatt.
Nice to be protected against getting the Holiday Inn or Doubletree worth a couple of extra bucks to me.
In the SFO zone I would argue that if the Hyatt and Sheraton deserve 4* then the Westin and the Marriott do too (of course none of them really deserve it).

Yes, it's nice to be able to avoid Holiday Inn and/or Doubletree.
And I 100% agree with you about Westin/Marriott vs Hyatt/Sheraton. So much so, that I posted this thread:
