From the Times of London:

Basically, the study found tight/narrow coach seating poses safety problems and delays people when exiting a plane during an emergency. Narrow pitch doesn't allow some taller passengers to fully assume the 'brace' position, and narrow seats hinder quick movement to the aisle.

The study recommends minimum coach pitch at 33" and minimum coach seating width at 19.5" and a requirement all aisle armrests be moveable.
