Do free rentals count towrds 5* and PC status?

The wording in the sticky thread on rental levels explained simply says "10 rentals" for 5* and "40 rentals" for PC, so I'm hpoing the answer is that free rentals DO count.

Rentals that count toward any status must be a PAID rental. You must pay for some portion of the rental for it to be counted. On weekends I typically use one of my free weekend day certs and then pay for the second day. That way I only pay for half the weekend and still get credit towards Presidents Circle status every year.

It has been my experience that totally free rentals do count. SEA, for example, doesn't bother to collect the taxes so they just send me on my way, yet the rental does apply towards renewing as PC.

I recently called customer service to get changed to 5* after I hit 10 paid rentals. I also had 2 free rentals this year. When the agent pulled up my account she noted that I had 12 rentals for the year and could upgrade me immediately.

I'm not sure if this would work if you wait for the automatic staus each year.
