So I have read about this "upgrade" (http://www.t-mobile.com/bisupgrade/) 15 or 16 times, but I still dont get it. It seems like they are saying they are basically doing away with the Blackberry Web Client server and pushing everyone to enterprise, but that Yahoo (which I now use to forward to BWC) will become an eneterprise server if i so desire.
But it says nothing about how this transition will take place. And further, if I forward old email from BWC to yahoo, yahoo will simply ridirect it back to the BWC!!!! In the past i have not found a way to capture the email on yahoo AND have it redirected to BWC. Has that feature been introduced?
I spoke with T-mobile CS but they were as clueless as me.
Finally, at the end, it says :
There will be no storage space limitation on e-mails sent to your BlackBerry Internet E-mail mailbox (username@tmo.blackberry.net), but those e-mails will be removed from the server after 30 days. You will have full access to e-mail content including attachments for the 30 days, regardless of the size of the files. After the 30 days, you will still have access to e-mails that are on the handheld, but not to attachments.
NOTE: this change ONLY affects e-mails sent to an address ending in @tmo.blackberry.net. Other e-mail services vary in their storage and time limits. So apparently the BWC is NOT going away, but it is going to become an in-box only????
Uhg. This is such a classic example of 'if it aint broke, let's fix it...'
Anyone know somewhere on the internet this is being discussed in some detail???

The way I read it, the newest BB handheld e-mail setup software can now do what they used to need the BWC website for, so the website's being discontinued. I can't see where it says or implies that Yahoo! will become a BES provider or that everyone will need to use BES. I just got a 7290 because my 7230 died, and it has the new e-mail client which is a web application that allows you to do some of what BWC does.

this is what i mean about Yahoo becoming more enterprise-like:All Yahoo! Mail accounts, including free accounts, are now supported. No need for Yahoo! POP3 access to get your Yahoo! Mail delivered.
E-mails to your Yahoo! Mail account are "pushed" to the handheld in real time.
E-mails sent, received, or deleted on your handheld will reflect changes at the original e-mail account – no need to manage the same e-mail account from two different places.
E-mails sent from your handheld will show the correct "Sent From" e-mail address, even with multiple e-mail accounts consolidated to the BlackBerry device.

Couple of things:
1) The Webclient service will stay; just not through the web anymore. All settings can be changed either on the handheld or in "my-tmobile".
2) Yahoo is becoming a true "push" provider, just like you fill in a third-party account like Gmail or your own ISP, when you enter Yahoo all their mail will be pushed to you with no delay.
3) The T-mobile website does have quite a lot of info on it:

There are also some discussions at www.blackberryforums.comIt sounds like the only change is that the push feature that has always been available on yahoo paid accounts will now be available on free accounts. But are they saying that deleted mail on handheld will now reconcile directly with yahoo (hence my confusion over whether yahoo is becoming an enterprise-type server)?
The thing that is nice about having the BWC is being able to access email and attachments easily and read and respond when 1) I am in my office where I get no mobile reception and 2) when i need to type faster than i can with my thumbs.
I feel like they are driving me to an enterprise environment, whether I like it or not.

As for gmail, a simple forward is the best and fastest option...

Ok, so Yahoo! will be like gmail?
On Yahoo, the 'push' passes along the email to my device without keeping a copy in my Yahoo inbox at all.
Does gmail keep the email in the inbox until one deletes it from the handheld?
Maybe I will push my yahoo email to my gmail account then push gmail to my blackberry. That way I wont have to change my email address and I can still look at my blackberry email inbox on a computer when I have no bberry signal in my office...

ScottC, I see what you mean about BBReply. So are you confirming what Yahoo and bberry have not confirmed to me as of yet: that on or before October 2 Yahoo WILL have the option (as gmail does now) of both forwarding AND saving to the yahoo inbox, archive or trash? And do automatic reconciliation with the handheld if desired? (seems like such a simple question, but no one at Yahoo or t-mobile have given me a difinitive answer!!!)
And if the answer is yes, why not allow that capability well before the end of BWC so we can get used to it/ensure proper functionality!??!!?

T-Mobile's info on the upgrade includes two statements that I just do not understand / can't seem to get to work
Account settings can now be managed directly from the handheld or through My T-Mobile. Once you log in to My T-Mobile, click the link titled Set Up BlackBerry Internet E-mail.
How do you access settings from the handheld?
When I log in to My T-Mobile, there is no mention of Set Up Blackberry Email. Anyone have any guidance on how this works (or does not work)?
For the best performance, T-Mobile recommends ensuring that your BlackBerry handheld has the latest version of software loaded. You can get the latest version of software at www.t-mobile.com/bbupgrade using your personal computer.
The software is only available for Windows PCs. I use an Apple PowerBook with PocketMac to synch MS Entourage with my BB.

Would the connection via PC muck up or erase my synch'ed-via-Pocketmac for Entourage contacts, calendar entries, notes, etc.?
Anything in particular I need for a PC - USB 1.1 or 2.0? In addition to the downloaded software from T-Mobile, I assume, I need some sort of "connection" software to load onto the PC. Where would I get that?
I guess a baseline question is do I need to download the new software? T-Mobile's announcement doesn't seem to mention that the new software is required - just seems to make my BB work better. Could I just go with the web site (I'm dealing with multiple email accounts currently linked via BWC)?

1) It won't mes sup your current sync unless you want it to. You need to enable syncing on the PC for it to even touch your contacts, so if you don't enable the syncing, it won't do anything. Which is what you want :)
2)The Berry is USB1 so any USB port will work.
3) You will have to install the Blackberry Desktop software and the upgrade package. Install the desktop first. Then close it. Install the upgrade, and then restart the desktop. Click "application loader" and it will perform the backup/upgrade/restore. It can take up to 40 minutes for the process to complete.
Finally; as far as I know you don't NEED the upgrade for these changes to the service, OS4 has some nice improvements but also slows the device down a little. So unless you run into problems after the changes, I'd stay where you are at the moment.
As you said, you can just go to the my t-mobile website on the 2nd and make any changes there, it is a PITA to do so on the device anyway.

First thing I noticed is it doesnt seem to forward in real time like the desktop redirector. It takes a while. Second thing is that I cant reply from the BB to any of the Gmail messages. Or more precisely, I cant send the reply. I can tell it to reply and I get the message with the address of the recipient, but then there is not place to send it. This is only on the gmail messages, the ones from my desktop redirector are fine. What the heck????

Why POP from them? Just forward it to the Blackberry account. POP on the BWC is never in realtime as it only pop's once every 15-20 minutes.
That is my setup; I forward all my Gmail mail to my tmobile.blackberry.net account, and use the free "BBReply" tool to set a from: address.

you will need OS4 for some of the "remote control" features, from what I've seen. It treats it almost like an enterprise server.
Also, on the reply-to tool, it doesn't change the from, just sets a reply-to, which is ok for some things, but not all.

I have to be honest, I didn't pay much attention to this upgrade and the details. I use my BB mostly for personal use since I cannot integrate with our coprorate stuff (coprate reasons, not technical).
I have had a few gripes and I'm not sure this change really effects many of them.
1- the mail box size limit was a serious issue, glad to hear that will be better
2- send from... sometimes I want to at least send an e-mail that looks like it came from my corporate account (even though I won't get replies on my BB). I have found some of the tools for that.
3- mailing lists deliver 2 copies - if I'm on a mailing list or distrobution group I get two copies of every incoming message, including ones I sent.
4 - have to filter out own replies to mailing lists - can fix the problem of seeing my own replies with a filter. I had to re-build all my filters today on my tmobile.
I'm seeing some improvements already. However, I run my own exchange server at home so I don't use yahoo or gmail for personal mail. So I'm not really sure there was a lot of benift to this change.
I've enjoied reading this thread thought, learned a fair ammount.

After getting no mail for several hours yesterday I resent my service books, a whole bunch of mail came through in one big chunk, and things seemed normal for a few hours - although a whole group of 'old' mail that had been previously sent also came through. Today, all I've had is two message that were already sent to the BB yesterday, no new mail even though I've gotten about 30-40 at work since then (99% of my mail is popped from my work server - we don't have the enterprise option). It looks like mail is being picked up from my server sporadically, if at all. Ideas? I've checked my settings through my t-mobile and they're still there.
The other thing is that I've lost the filters I had set on the BB mail server - mainly to not forward mail that had already been identified as "spam" by my primary server. These message are now getting sent through (when anything is sent). I haven't found any way to set filters through my t-mobile. This will be a big pain when roaming since I don't want to pay for all that spam - when I'm in the US it is just an annoyance , when abroad I'm paying as I go.

Here is the thing: I travel a lot. I do not always have web access which is why I, you know, HAVE A FREAKING BLACKBERRY.
Thanks to this 'upgrade' I was without email for about 36 hours and it seems like at least half of the emails I DID receive during that time were lost to the ether.
As of this morning (finally), my yahoo and my device are playing somewhat nicely, although i have timed the time to get from out box to device and it is averaging a little over 10 minutes, as opposed to immediate under the BWC.
I havent decided yet how much I like the new system because it is really hard to get the bitter, bitter taste of the transition out of my mouth.

Well, I didn't go out and buy a cheap refurb WinPC (see my previous queries in this thread) and decided to give the new T-Mobile BB system a try. All day, Sunday, 2 October, spotty service to T-Mobile account (tmo.whatever . . .), GMail and Yahoo accounts. For the latter two, the delete from handheld v. delete from handheld and server doesn't work (as far as I can tell). It "seems" to be working now (Monday, 3 October pm). But, who knows what is lost in the ether! Weirdly, yesterday and then today, a second time, received a whole slew of (in substance) "Congratualtions, you email account [XXXX] is activated" emails.
T-Mobile has just seemed to manage this poorly. I'm not impressed.

Well, I'll eat 1/2 a dish of crow.....
Turns out that the reason I couldn't set up email was that the little phone icon in the upper right hand corner of the page showed some random phone as "my" phone -- and that phone was not data enabled so apparently I couldn't add email set up because the web thinks that I didn't have a blackberry device.
Otoh, on the left side of the page it says that my service plan is "Blackberry Unlimited Data" or somesuch. You would think that their database would be smart enough to know that if I had a Blackberry plan, I had a Blackberry device.
So, partly my bad, but partly their odd website and database lookups.
A related question: I wanted to try to see if I could add T-mobile Hotspot for a month at the discounted $19.95 (which the main T-mobile hotspot page says can be done for current gprs subscribers). But when I try to do so, I get a response telling me that T-mobile Wifi is not available for my device. If I change my phone to a wifi enable device and try again, I get a message that my Blackberry plan doesn't allow this add-on.
Argh.
So, question for your longtime T-mobilers: a) For current customers (even Blackberry ones) can you add Hotspot a month at a time (and then cancel it when you're done needing it for awhile -- unlike the annual commitment plan), b) if so, does this apply to T-mobile Blackberry data only customers?

I would just call them about adding the Hot Spot. As I recall I added this onto my BB plan at the reduced rate for no extra charge.
By the way, I have that little phone icon on the upper right of my device. It has been there since I upgraded the handheld. I have no idea what it means.

You can even add a hotspot for a day and then remove it. You'll only get charged for that one day :D

Thanks, but where? ;) I dont see it.
If you haven't figured it out yet, here's how I got to it: clicked on the "Messages" icon with the wheel, then click the wheel again to get the menu, the scrolled down and selected "options" , email reconcilation option is on the resulting page.

T-mobile has been mostly down since last night 7pm CST.
It is getting very annoying, they REALLY messed up this migration.

It just went out on me about 2:00 this afternoon (EDT). I pulled the battery this evening and reset it and it is fine now.

I'm glad it wasn't just me. I was beginning to feel "special". My mail started coming through about 4:00 PM eastern, but before then, I felt very out of touch... :(

I just wanted to close the loop on this upgrade and say:
Now that the glitches seem to be worked out I am pretty happy with this change in service.
Still not happy with how the transition was handled, but all in all the increased mailbox capacity that came with the yahoo integration has worked out for the best. I am still not satisfied with google but since that is a secondary mailbox I can just deal.

I've been mostly happy with it, but the gmail has been so so. I understand that they are still working on it.

Glad to know they are still working on the gmail aspect. Yahoo works but gmail is slow and doesnt reconcile.
