Wondering if anyone can provide some assistance here. I'm currently about 5K MQM short of Gold medallion for this year (would like to make it for the 1st time) and certainly in no condition to be doing any mileage runs from now till end of year to make up for the difference (I'm 7 months pregnant). So I figure my way around it....applied for the Delta Gold Amex for the 15 bonus miles (card fee waived) and upgrade to Platinum for the 5MQM right away. I was wondering if by doing that:

1) Will I be charged the Delta Plat card fee ($135)minus the $85 supposed Gold Card fee (though it was waived for me) or will I be charged the full amount seeing that I did of course apply for the Gold card first, fee waived?

2) Do you think I'll get the MQM's posted in time before end of year if I do this relatively soon?

3) If I cancel my AMex card before renewal (which I probably will, seeing that I don't forsee really spending 25K to get the bonus 10K MQMs by years round), to avoid renewal fee, would they revoke my MQM's issued to me? I realize that's some time from now even if I wait till the 11month of card usage but just wondering.

Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks much!

It takes 8-12 weeks for the MQM to post. I was told as long as you did it in this year it will count. So I enrolled in Dec of 03. Well I had 20+ emails and phone calls to both AMEX and Delta for them to honor what they promissed. Both AMEX nor Delta wanted to touch it and they blamed the other. As there are barely 12 weeks left in the year, I'd sign up today.

Thanks all for the advice and I will best get right on it. ^

What you should do is sign up online using a promotional link. You'll get the $135 waived and the bonus miles. Once your new card comes in the mail you can start transferring any automatic payments to it from your old card. Once your old card is completely paid off you can call to cancel it, and then they'll refund the remainder of your annual fee.

Are they promotional links out there for the upgrade to the Platinum Delta card? Is it a link to upgrade to apply for it separately? im confused about your last statement of refunding the remainder of the fee. If it's waived then what is there to refund? I'm currently holding the Gold now fee free.
