hello experts...so i got a dell x1 this week as my new laptop for work, but now i can't find the power adaptor for it that will work on the airplane. I'm travelling on usairways on airbii all the time and i'd like to plug in. The 3cell battery is only lasting 2-2 1/2 hours.
Ideally i'd like to get a little kit that would work with my dv1000 HP laptop as well.
Any suggestions?
Chris

Get an iGo juice with the required tips. www.igo.com has the configuration tools.

THanks for the quick response, but they don't list it on any of their configuration tools, they only list like the x300 .

The X1 uses the same charger as for the following models:
Dell Inspiron 300m/500m/600m/700m/8600 / Latitude D400/D410/D500/D505/D510/D600/D610/X1/X300 Series Notebooks
So you need iGo tip S20, which does not come standard with all their Juice kits. For the HP you'll need tip S2 which does come with the Juice. If you buy it at Radio Shack you'll be allowed one free tip.
SO, get this: http://www.igo.com/product_detail.asp?ProductCode=MOB+PS0055-11
and you'll have a car/air/wall charger for the Dell AND the HP. They also have tips for the ipod, Blackberry, and many many other devices.

I have the Dell Latitude D800, and at least for the D800, the iGO will not charge the battery, just power the laptop.
Looks like Dell has a 'chip' in their power supply to enable charging the battery, and they are the only ones that will do that. A lot of complaints in the Dell support groups.

I have a 700m looking to upgrade to x1. How do you like it? Did you get the optical drive with it? Does it work well?

I have both a 700m (personal machine) and a X1. I think they are pretty comparable, the only big difference is the size of the X1. The downside on it though is that the DVD/CD drive is external and plugs into the USB port. This is fine, except when I'm tryint to watch a DVD on an airplane, it takes up a lot more room on the tray.
The other downside is that the X1 does not have the wide screen, so if the (^%*) in front of me decides to recline their seat, I have trouble, whereas the 700M doesn't have this problem.

At 1.10GHz it is terribly underpowered. It reminds me of Transmeta Crusoe chips. Having a DVD drive built in wouldn't have been much use, as it simply doesn't perform too well playing back DVD's with its slow CPU.
Far better and faster machines out there.

I and other Dell owners have been looking for airplane power connecters for our models with no luck at all. Surely, they have not made multiple models that don't have them. The Inspiron 5150 is mine and it has been a frustrating two years looking for one. Extra batteries are heavy and pricey. Good luck!

Not much of a comparison; the 5150 uses a true P4 CPU, not even a low power CPU. The lack of an air adapter for it is because it simply uses too much power for an airline DC socket. The X1 is a very low power machine, empower won't have any trouble charging it.

First I've heard as to the why I can't find one. Thanks.

The problem is that the D800 draws more power than the iGO can provide for charging and powering the laptop. I believe in-flight power adapters have a hard 75 watt limit and IIRC that particular Dell requires 90 watts. If you turn the notebook off, it will charge but it can't do both at once. Prior to a bios update many Dell models wouldn't even WORK off an air adapter as they couldn't draw enough power.
If you don't need the power of a fullsize or the graphics, consider a subnotebook. They're powerful enough for office tasks (I've even abused mine by working on a 650MB Access database with it, it wasn't blazing but it did the job) and great for DVD watching. They also draw so little power that I can be charging my iPod or PSP, using the laptop while it's charging it's battery AND charging the Treo from the laptop's USB port... without anything melting down.

IMO that's more to do with the hard drive than the CPU. My Fujitsu P7010 was a DOG until I stuffed it with 1GB RAM and a 7200 RPM HDD. I lost about 15 minutes in battery life but it woke up the performance to where the little thing is downright decent. I can even play World of Warcraft on it if I turn all the visual goodies off. :D
