I'll become silver on my booked flights and would have to do a mileage run
to become gold.

I'm already star alliance gold thru United.

I want status on NZ for discounted business class availability (as if there is
any) and for possible upgrades trans-pacific.

Is there an advantage to be gold vs. silver? Are more seats allocated to gold than silver?

Thanks.

After these October One changes, Gold Airpoints members Business award availability draws from the I bucket (as currently) and R bucket (which is the same bucket used for heavily discounted agent tickets in Business). if you have access to a CRS look up the R bucket on NZ, to see for yourself.

Otherwise apart from the upgrades there is NO other benefit of being Gold Airpoints over Star Alliance Gold. Keep in mind though, that more benefits are rumoured to be announced in due course.

So silver members don't draw from the "R" bucket?

So silver members don't draw from the "R" bucket? That's right - they draw only from I which is shared across other Star Alliance member's as well.
