Travel Technology - Firefox 1.5 beta 1 released

After a few months of the "Deer Park" alpha, Firefox 1.5 has finally made Beta 1:

nice, I'll check it out. release notes say there's "Improvements to popup blocking" - I welcome that!

yep, it's only a beta, so keep that in mind when deciding on whether to install. in my experiences, FF betas are quite stable, but no guarantees

If that's the case and until it's somehow addressed, I won't be upgrading either. :(

I'm still using the Mozilla (original) suite. I wonder how long they'll continue supporting it.

There has been some discussion in assorted geeky places about browser developers adding things to combat phishing scams. (That's where you get an e-mail that pretends to be from someone like PayPal or your bank and asks you to click on a link to verify your personal info. You click and get a page that looks like it's from whoever but really isn't.) One of the methods is to always display the location of a page, even if it's a popup with "location='no' " in the command that opened it. That way, someone who thinks s/he's going to paypal.com and ends up somewhere else can at least tell what happened.

Does anyone know if FireFox 1.5 does this?

Currently, I am using both Opera and Firefox. I like the Opera browser better, but Firefox has more extensions and is compatible with more software. Hopefully this new version will finally make it as good as Opera.

While they market it as being more secure, who knows?

Yet this latest Firefox version does include a keyboard shortcut that permits users to wipe their personal details like passwords and/or browsing history.

it takes a little while for them to be updated.

when I installed it back in Sept, 05, I couldn't get any of the current extensions I use to work. but, I ran two instances of the applicaiton and that worked.

will try the update today. build is about 200 version later.

Google toolbar worked fine, after it auto-updated itself.

the worst one to lose,
was adblock. that extension is #1 in my book, and losing it was annoying. I don't know how long till they update it.

I wish they were better about adding backward compatibility with extensions...it seems like you always have to wait after a new release for updated extensions

I just checked the website for extensions, and there IS an update for Adblock. Don't know why the extension updater for FF didn't work, but then again it doesn't really work that well either.

so, back to normal.

although, I am now getting a web page taking way too long to load screen, which is annoying and I don't really know how to change it. Flyertalk takes its time sometimes, and this would be a pain.

Google toolbar worked fine, after it auto-updated itself.

Sucks not having RoboForm

I'm glad it was posted that RoboForm hasn't updated for the new version. That's my #1 tool on Firefox, and I will wait until it's available on the new version. I hope that happens soon.

I no longer have the scroll bar on the side of the window. Or in smaller windows or dropdowns. Like the forum select pulldown on this site for example. What happened there? Also, my history bar has a glitchy tab, that when hovered over, says 'page has no feeds.' Maybe its the skin I'm using.

Nevermind. Just updated the extension and all is well.

Which spell checker are you using? Spellbound? If so, I had to re-install it as I had done an uninstall-reinstall of firefox to upgrade (I had been using RC3 at the time). No problems with any of my extensions now and FF 1.5 is working great.

Now they need to release T-Bird as a non-beta, though the 1.5 beta is working fine for me (and I like the in-line spell checker :) )

I'm not sure about this one. I certainly don't get any pop up ads with 1.5. I do have all the popular ad sites blocked in my hosts file though.

I thought Roboforms was too invasive for my tastes and Firefox remembers most all my passwords anyway. The only extension I use is the weather forecast tool and that works fine with 1.5 so I'm happy.

Still haven't upgraded. Looks like version 1.5 is still a little buggy...

Since not everyone is getting the problem, it could be one of your extensions. Try turning them off one by one and see if that fixes the problem.

Try resizing the window, exiting the program and restarting it. Also, it that doesn't work, perhaps uninstall and reinstall the program.

1.5 is not beta any more. It's the full release. It's disappointing that Mozilla has released such a buggy version from beta.

I'd suggest upgrading to the latest versions of these as well. For example, what version of Acrobat reader are you using? I've heard Version 6 was somewhat buggy, and while 7.0 seems a lot more stable I've also had one or two problems with it, outside of Firefox.

I had the same problem while running Firefox 1.0.7. It occurred just after I had updated one of my extensions, I believe it was Tabbrowser Preferences. After unistalling the extension it went away. Upon reinstalling the problem came back. I uninstalled it and waited for an update to the extension that fixed the problem.

I have upgraded to 1.5 with absolutely no problems with my extensions.

I've deleted ALL my extensions, and the problem is fixed!
Now I'm having a problem seeing the Suduko puzzle on msnbc.com, but at least I can print it out. :confused:

Anyone else have video in-browser problems after upgrading from 1.07 to 1.5? Now I only get sound, no picture! I've reinstalled Real Player and even tried Real Alternative; no dice. IE works no problem.

I got video to play at espn.com, but I noticed that the controls (stop, FF, rew) didn't work. I haven't had time to debug or try anything else.

Try reinstalling Acrobat.
And make sure you have the latest updates to Acrobat (one of them fixed an incompatibility w. FF) which means you should be running version 7.0.5.

Do a search on Google for "Mozbackup", backup the entire browser profile and simply move that to the new PC, then use Mozbackup again to restore the profile.

There are also Extensions for Mozilla that will export your entire password history to a text file, but Mozbackup is by far the easiest solution.

Is anyone having problems with 1.5 on FlyerTalk? I'm having this weird thing happen where whenever I click on a thread or the MyFlyerTalk button it initially takes me to the link but then takes me to the general forums page. I then have to hit the back button and the 'Stop Loading' button after the thread initially loads so it doesn't forward me to the forums page. It's driving me nuts! Any ideas?

FYI in case anyone cares - I have the extension called 'RefControl'. I added www.flyertalk.com on it as being able to send referrer info (all others are blocked) and that solved the problem. I'm not sure why it would have done that, as I don't have problems with any other sites. But I'm glad to have it solved.
