Travel Technology - Firefox 1.5 beta 1 releasedView Full Version : Firefox 1.5 beta 1 released ScottC Sep 9, 05, 9:51 am After a few months of the "Deer Park" alpha, Firefox 1.5 has finally made Beta 1: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/ zxcvbs Sep 9, 05, 10:36 am nice, I'll check it out. release notes say there's "Improvements to popup blocking" - I welcome that! jfe Sep 9, 05, 10:45 am It also says Note: This is not the final release of our Web browser, it has been made available for testing purposes only, with no end-user support. If that sounds scary, you'd probably be better off with the latest version of Firefox 1.0. zxcvbs Sep 9, 05, 1:41 pm yep, it's only a beta, so keep that in mind when deciding on whether to install. in my experiences, FF betas are quite stable, but no guarantees ScottC Sep 9, 05, 4:58 pm Shame, virtually none of the extensions work on 1.5 :( Back to 1.0.6 it is... LIH Prem Sep 10, 05, 1:58 am We need pop-under blocking now. Is that in there? -David MovieMan Sep 10, 05, 2:30 am Shame, virtually none of the extensions work on 1.5 :( If that's the case and until it's somehow addressed, I won't be upgrading either. :( richard Sep 10, 05, 11:16 am I'm still using the Mozilla (original) suite. I wonder how long they'll continue supporting it. kkjay77 Sep 10, 05, 3:07 pm I need to try this out even. Thanks for the info doc Nov 30, 05, 8:18 am Mozilla Firefox 1.5 has landed http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/11/30/firefox_upgrade/ SRQ Guy Nov 30, 05, 8:21 am Thanks for the update! I'm upgrading as we speak. :) Efrem Nov 30, 05, 9:02 am There has been some discussion in assorted geeky places about browser developers adding things to combat phishing scams. (That's where you get an e-mail that pretends to be from someone like PayPal or your bank and asks you to click on a link to verify your personal info. You click and get a page that looks like it's from whoever but really isn't.) One of the methods is to always display the location of a page, even if it's a popup with "location='no' " in the command that opened it. That way, someone who thinks s/he's going to paypal.com and ends up somewhere else can at least tell what happened. Does anyone know if FireFox 1.5 does this? chuckd Nov 30, 05, 9:23 am Cool. getting it now. Hope it keeps all my passwords and cookies from 1.0 SRQ Guy Nov 30, 05, 9:47 am Cool. getting it now. Hope it keeps all my passwords and cookies from 1.0 It does. :) dcrandall Nov 30, 05, 10:22 am Currently, I am using both Opera and Firefox. I like the Opera browser better, but Firefox has more extensions and is compatible with more software. Hopefully this new version will finally make it as good as Opera. jfe Nov 30, 05, 11:30 am No RoboForm :td: No Google Toolbar :td: No Spellchecker :td: If someone else has found extensions for 1.5 for all of the above would appreciate the link, otherwise I need to go back to the old version. doc Nov 30, 05, 11:35 am Not that I know of, Efrem, but I am more of an IE guy! ;) While they market it as being more secure, who knows? Yet this latest Firefox version does include a keyboard shortcut that permits users to wipe their personal details like passwords and/or browsing history. Mark nmenaker Nov 30, 05, 11:35 am it takes a little while for them to be updated. when I installed it back in Sept, 05, I couldn't get any of the current extensions I use to work. but, I ran two instances of the applicaiton and that worked. will try the update today. build is about 200 version later. ScottC Nov 30, 05, 11:39 am No RoboForm :td: No Google Toolbar :td: No Spellchecker :td: If someone else has found extensions for 1.5 for all of the above would appreciate the link, otherwise I need to go back to the old version. Google toolbar worked fine, after it auto-updated itself. nmenaker Nov 30, 05, 11:43 am the worst one to lose, was adblock. that extension is #1 in my book, and losing it was annoying. I don't know how long till they update it. zxcvbs Nov 30, 05, 11:50 am I wish they were better about adding backward compatibility with extensions...it seems like you always have to wait after a new release for updated extensions nmenaker Nov 30, 05, 12:02 pm I just checked the website for extensions, and there IS an update for Adblock. Don't know why the extension updater for FF didn't work, but then again it doesn't really work that well either. so, back to normal. although, I am now getting a web page taking way too long to load screen, which is annoying and I don't really know how to change it. Flyertalk takes its time sometimes, and this would be a pain. jfe Nov 30, 05, 12:16 pm Google toolbar worked fine, after it auto-updated itself. One down, two to go. Sucks not having RoboForm MeLike2Travel Nov 30, 05, 2:54 pm I'm glad it was posted that RoboForm hasn't updated for the new version. That's my #1 tool on Firefox, and I will wait until it's available on the new version. I hope that happens soon. chuckd Nov 30, 05, 3:06 pm I no longer have the scroll bar on the side of the window. Or in smaller windows or dropdowns. Like the forum select pulldown on this site for example. What happened there? Also, my history bar has a glitchy tab, that when hovered over, says 'page has no feeds.' Maybe its the skin I'm using. Nevermind. Just updated the extension and all is well. empedocles Nov 30, 05, 3:15 pm Hmmm... Will wait a few more months before I upgrade, methinks... jfe Nov 30, 05, 3:57 pm I think I am going back to the old version terrysalmi Nov 30, 05, 9:31 pm After hearing everyones comments, i'm sticking with what I have now that's working :) 1.0.7! Waiting a bit before installing software upgrades is almost always a smart choice. SRQ Guy Dec 1, 05, 9:02 am FWIW, I just reverted back to 1.0.7. AdBlock doesn't seem to work correctly in 1.5. I'll give it some more time. jfe Dec 1, 05, 11:12 am Roboform is now working http://www.roboform.com/dist/AiRoboForm-Mozilla-Adapter.exe Now, the spellchecker and everything will be back to normal Teacher49 Dec 1, 05, 11:23 am http://www.roboform.com/ ;) Thanks! LHR Tim Dec 2, 05, 2:34 am Roboform is now working http://www.roboform.com/dist/AiRoboForm-Mozilla-Adapter.exe Now, the spellchecker and everything will be back to normal Which spell checker are you using? Spellbound? If so, I had to re-install it as I had done an uninstall-reinstall of firefox to upgrade (I had been using RC3 at the time). No problems with any of my extensions now and FF 1.5 is working great. Now they need to release T-Bird as a non-beta, though the 1.5 beta is working fine for me (and I like the in-line spell checker :) ) stimpy Dec 4, 05, 1:56 am FWIW, I just reverted back to 1.0.7. AdBlock doesn't seem to work correctly in 1.5. I'll give it some more time. I'm not sure about this one. I certainly don't get any pop up ads with 1.5. I do have all the popular ad sites blocked in my hosts file though. I thought Roboforms was too invasive for my tastes and Firefox remembers most all my passwords anyway. The only extension I use is the weather forecast tool and that works fine with 1.5 so I'm happy. FoPAA Dec 4, 05, 9:34 am Anyone else have an annoying blank space at the bottom of the window (about an inch-and-a-half of unused real estate)? Know how to get rid of it? DeafFlyer Dec 4, 05, 2:18 pm Anyone else have an annoying blank space at the bottom of the window (about an inch-and-a-half of unused real estate)? Know how to get rid of it? A friend had that. No idea why. Non-NonRev Dec 4, 05, 4:39 pm Anyone else have an annoying blank space at the bottom of the window (about an inch-and-a-half of unused real estate)? Know how to get rid of it?Same here (just under the status bar). Unfortunately, I have no clue as to how to eliminate it. Also, I notice that some links will not open (whether to a new tab or to a new window). Is anyone else getting that symptom? MovieMan Dec 4, 05, 10:22 pm Same here (just under the status bar). Unfortunately, I have no clue as to how to eliminate it. Still haven't upgraded. Looks like version 1.5 is still a little buggy... Since not everyone is getting the problem, it could be one of your extensions. Try turning them off one by one and see if that fixes the problem. mongatu Dec 5, 05, 10:21 am Try resizing the window, exiting the program and restarting it. Also, it that doesn't work, perhaps uninstall and reinstall the program. slippahs Dec 5, 05, 10:30 am I've been having problems with 1.5 and Adobe PDF files. Some files will lock up my 'puter. Others come out as "this file has been damaged and cannot be repaired." :( Apparently, no fix has been issued. Then I reminded myself that 1.5 is beta. SRQ Guy Dec 5, 05, 10:41 am 1.5 is not beta any more. It's the full release. It's disappointing that Mozilla has released such a buggy version from beta. MovieMan Dec 5, 05, 11:10 am I've been having problems with 1.5 and Adobe PDF files. Some files will lock up my 'puter. Others come out as "this file has been damaged and cannot be repaired." :( Apparently, no fix has been issued. Then I reminded myself that 1.5 is beta. Looks like there may still be some incompatibilities with some programs and extensions (though as has been pointed out, 1.5 is not a beta). I'd suggest upgrading to the latest versions of these as well. For example, what version of Acrobat reader are you using? I've heard Version 6 was somewhat buggy, and while 7.0 seems a lot more stable I've also had one or two problems with it, outside of Firefox. stimpy Dec 5, 05, 11:25 am I have Acrobat 6.0.4 and it works perfectly with Firefox 1.5 dcrandall Dec 5, 05, 12:04 pm Anyone else have an annoying blank space at the bottom of the window (about an inch-and-a-half of unused real estate)? Know how to get rid of it? I had the same problem while running Firefox 1.0.7. It occurred just after I had updated one of my extensions, I believe it was Tabbrowser Preferences. After unistalling the extension it went away. Upon reinstalling the problem came back. I uninstalled it and waited for an update to the extension that fixed the problem. I have upgraded to 1.5 with absolutely no problems with my extensions. FoPAA Dec 5, 05, 4:08 pm I've deleted ALL my extensions, and the problem is fixed! Now I'm having a problem seeing the Suduko puzzle on msnbc.com, but at least I can print it out. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. slippahs Dec 5, 05, 6:00 pm Looks like there may still be some incompatibilities with some programs and extensions (though as has been pointed out, 1.5 is not a beta). Try reinstalling Acrobat. magiciansampras Dec 6, 05, 8:06 am Anyone else have video in-browser problems after upgrading from 1.07 to 1.5? Now I only get sound, no picture! I've reinstalled Real Player and even tried Real Alternative; no dice. IE works no problem. stimpy Dec 6, 05, 8:42 am I got video to play at espn.com, but I noticed that the controls (stop, FF, rew) didn't work. I haven't had time to debug or try anything else. mongatu Dec 6, 05, 6:27 pm Try reinstalling Acrobat. And make sure you have the latest updates to Acrobat (one of them fixed an incompatibility w. FF) which means you should be running version 7.0.5. Efrem Dec 12, 05, 8:31 am Here's an article in today's Wired News (http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,69781,00.html) about FireFox extensions: With the release of the new version 1.5 of Firefox, there's never been a better time to download the open-source browser, take it for a drive, kick the tires and see what it can do... Fortunately, Firefox is famous for its pluggable extensions architecture, which allows you to download little snippets of code that act as the software equivalent of small consumer electronics devices, only they are free... Some extensions don't yet work with the new version of Firefox, but most actively maintained add-ons have been updated, or will be shortly. If your favorite isn't there yet, you can always e-mail the developer. They love that. To get you started, here's a list of the Firefox extensions you absolutely can't live without... Sylvia Do a search on Google for "Mozbackup", backup the entire browser profile and simply move that to the new PC, then use Mozbackup again to restore the profile. There are also Extensions for Mozilla that will export your entire password history to a text file, but Mozbackup is by far the easiest solution. I'm having this weird thing happen where whenever I click on a thread or the MyFlyerTalk button it initially takes me to the link but then takes me to the general forums page. I then have to hit the back button and the 'Stop Loading' button after the thread initially loads so it doesn't forward me to the forums page. It's driving me nuts! Any ideas? MeLike2Travel Jan 3, 06, 11:35 pm FYI in case anyone cares - I have the extension called 'RefControl'. I added www.flyertalk.com on it as being able to send referrer info (all others are blocked) and that solved the problem. I'm not sure why it would have done that, as I don't have problems with any other sites. But I'm glad to have it solved. |
