American Express Membership Rewards - air france business class companion ticket
AIr France offers a business class companion ticket from the USA to France for 90,000 membership miles. It's not clear at all what fare class the purchased ticket has to be in. The rules says something about JRT and CRT. I can buy a biz ticket for about $2400. WOuld that qualify?

No.
CRT is the cheaper of the two fare codes you quoted; and that fare (on the JFK-CDG route) is $6619.00 plus tax and surcharges at the moment.
I kind of figured that. In as much as my AMEX platimum card allows a companion biz ticket for free when buying a full fare biz ticket, why woould anyone cough up 90,000 miles to do the same thing?
AMEX must think there's a sucker born every minute, and I guess there must be. They want 90,000 miles for a companion biz class ticket on AF providing you purchase a full fare biz ticket at approx. $6500. I just "bought" a biz class ticket on AF from Continental using 100,000 miles with no required purchase. And if you want to, you could buy a biz class ticket 50 days ahead and 7 days minimum stay for $2400. And AMEX already gives you a free companion ticket in BIZ class on quite a few airlines with a full fare biz ticket. So can anybody tell me why anyone would ever to the 90,000 mile AMEX deal?

With 100,000 DL miles (or transfering that amount from your AMEX Membership Rewards account to DL if you so choose) you can get a FIRST CLASS award ticket on AF from the USA to Europe. My wife and I have each done that for this summer to visit Paris and Italy. Beats me why anyone would spend 90K for a business ticket when they also have to pay full business fare to get that option. Makes no sense.

One reason is that the companion tickets typically book into revenue, and not reward, fare classes.
