I stopped by the AppleStore after lunch and got myself a new white 4gb iPod nano. This will replace my nearly 4 year old v1.0 5gb.

It's really small. I'm afraid I'll leave it in a pocket and accidently drop it in the laundry.

I haven't played around much, but it's going to be hard to be productive for the rest of the day.

HOW?!? WHERE?!? I called or stopped by all the local stores here. One fine Circuit City employee had the nerve to say. "There's no such thing." Both Apple Stores claimed that the first they even heard about it was yesterday, and expect to get some in by the weekend. THE WEEKEND?!?!? I WANT ONE NOW!!!

I put the Apple Store on speed dial...calling every hour.

Same here. Picked one up. :)

The got them in 10 minutes earlier and were still unpacking them :D

Lucky me :D

FWIW; I got the Black one. It is gorgeous. The 6Gb mini and the shuffle are heading for Ebay this afternoon :D

Don't quite understand what the little dock adapter does, on the Apple website it claims that the nano dock is the same as the mini dock, and it does fit. The dock adapter looks more like it is for the regular ipod...

I have always LOVED the ipod. I just didn't want one simply because everyone has one. I gave in a few months ago.

FWIW; I had a 5Gb ipod the day it was released, the first to make retail through Apple Netherlands and have had pretty much every other model since then. I just didn't like to admit it.

As for the nano; it is simply amazing. Had the usual little trouble getting itunes to work with it, but now it is up and running I am thrilled. Sadly my Griffin airclick doesn't work with it :(

According to my Apple store they should ALL received them today or tomorrow. Initial shipment is just 25 units. Some stores only get 2Gb, some only get 4Gb. Some get white, some get black. No stores have accessories yet.

Sadly my Griffin airclick doesn't work with it :(I'm guessing the Airclick adapts to the iPod like the iTrips, etc. (with a plug in the headphone jack and another in the rectangular slot)?

The Nano doesn't have these two outlets like the iPod and the Mini?

I was all set to buy a shuffle. Then I saw the ipod battery class action settlement, so figured I'd wait for the $50 cert from apple (as I couldn't think of any other apple product I wanted).

The nano is pretty irresistable. Wonder if I'll manage to wait.

Sadly no. It has a dock and a headphone jack.

But I'm sure the Apple accessory companies are working their backsides off to design cool add-ons as quick as they can come up with them...

Well, I just ordered one of these, and I have absolutely no idea how to work one. I am a total neophyte. I am interested in putting my language c.d.'s on it, and also loading it with audio books to take while traveling. Just from reading what all of you have posted I got the courage to go for it. I grew up with rotary dial phones, so this is a leap for me!!

If you can post on an Internet forum, you'll be able to use it no problem.

If you're not already using iTunes, you might want to get it loaded on your machine and start familiarizing yourself with it and begin ripping or importing your music/audio book collection into it. That way when your iPod arrives, you can just plug it in, load it up and use it.

It can be a good product. I've heard more complaints about the more recent releases... I am curious to see how the nano holds up sicne it is so small. But being that tiny and then having a color screen sure is cool looking.

My iPod nano just arrived by courier - I got the 4GB white version. Considering I ordered on the web on Wednesday evening, it seems that Apple has sorted out some of their supply chain issues (like the 12-day wait for the iPod shuffle when I ordered that).

It's a thing of beauty - really seems even slimmer than it looks on the web site.

Well, if I can make up my mind between the black or the white one, they can count me as another convert.

Love my Iriver ihp-120, particularly for the optical line in, but I had been thinking about how nice it might be to have a smaller/lighter Ipod mini for those trips when I won't need to record anything...and/or a flash drive player for working out. The Nano seems to meet both of those "needs". :D

The nanos look pretty sweet. I'm trying to decide between that and this sony: http://www.dapreview.net/news.php?15

Sonic stage sucks, but you can use itunes to do everything but upload the music to it.

The Nano seems great, but will I have problems using it with my existing copy of iTunes? I currently have an iPod with just under 17GB of tracks on it. If I dock the Nano, will iTunes just try to put the first 4GB of music onto it, or do I have the choice of which tracks to load? I still want to be able to use the original iPod, so do not want to "crop" my existing iTunes library.

Cheers.

The only thing that irks me is that it's not really that small and hence the "nano" is a misnomer. "iPod Micro" would have been more appropriate. If it were truly nano, we wouldn't be able to see it. ;)

Man I am just drooling reading all of the posts. I will be getting ready to pass down my mini and getting a nano. I am waiting for it to come to Circuit City. The reason I will not buy it at the apple store is because apple care is terrible. Circuit City offers Circuit City Care for the same amount as Apple Care and they cover your ipod completely. No matter what the problem they will just give you another one instead of trying to fix it. With apple care you have to send it in etc.... Circuit city you just bring it in and show them your problem - they call circuit city care and bam you get another one. Battery problems - no problem. You get a new one ipod.

oh that's brilliant. :D

regarding the BT mouse... I prefer my Logitek. My apple one doesn't seem as responsive. There's also the corded Mighty Mouse. I'm surprised you didn't pick one of those up. ;)

If you travel, have you considered getting a couple of iSights? My SO is a consultant, and the iSight really takes the edge off when he's away. I set my Powerbook on the bedside table, fall asleep to his snoring and wake up to him beginning his day. very cool.

If you're ever in Austin, let me know, and I'll treat you to dinner as a thank you. ;) I'll even graciously pick a venue that doesn't have crow on the menu.

I left the Apple keyboard/mouse in the box, I had a nice Logitech set collecting dust and connected those, worked right away.

On my "other" PC I have a Logitech DiNovo, but don't want to have to keep switching and repairing with the PC...

So far I am impressed, it is a little less responsive/fast as I am used to, but it is very usable. Things that were a hassle on the PC like wireless networking and phone syncing were extremely easy.

This is my first real mac in quite some time. I think I'm going to like it.

There are a couple of bugs in itunes 5.0. I erased a bunch of podcasts, told itunes to NOT sync my podcasts, and they still got transferred to the nano. I ended up having to do a restore because no matter what I did they kept popping up.

Next one. The web site claims up to 14 hours playback which sounds great. But then I noticed up to 15 hours for the iPod is also stated. I'm lucky to get 5-odd hours on mine (a 40GB - second generation I think). Can any of you give a realistic figure please? Thanks again.

If you make a Playlist it will display the number of songs, total time duration, and total file size in the status area (center bottom of iTunes window). Select "Automatically update selected playlists only:" and select the playlist you just made.

I have more music than would fit, so I made a playlist, dragged about 3.5 gb of songs into it and selected that playlist to be synced in the iPod preferences. I left some extra space for my photos, I have about 6k from this year alone.

I don't understand why Windows users always get so frustrated with iTunes. Most of my windows colleagues actively try to avoid iTunes. I've been using it since the first version, and it works just fine.

I think something might be wrong with your iPod. I've been close to the stated amount of playtime on mine.

On the full size iPods, song size makes a difference. If you're listening to songs that don't fit into the memory buffer, the hard drive might be spinning more often, thus decreasing your battery life.

Backlight and browsing / selecting songs not in a playlist also cause shorter battery life.

It could also be that your battery has worn out. They typically die after a few hundrend charge/discharge cycles.

You might want to check out a service I just found that I wish had known about when I got my first digital music player. Awaken.com will rip your CDs to the digital format of your choice and send you fully organized and tagged files on DVD (for backup). For an extra fee, they'll organize your CDs in a binder before returning them to you. I had already converted about half my collection but I just sent them the other half because it was taking up WAY too much time.

I really have to hand it to the Apple mktg. group on this one.

Last year they got caught in a bind at the holidays because they couldn't get the mini's into the stores fast enough. By launching the nano in Sept. they've probably dodged the "just released" distribution problems.

My money is on the release of nano "colors" just in time for the holidays.

Why is everyone going goo-goo over this thing? There is nothing really innovative about the nano. I guess the American consumer is really behind in terms of DAP's. Apple finally catches up to the Korean DAP makers by offering a nicely featured product. It still is not as full featured as some other flash players. I give them credit for being the 1st to introduce a 4gb flash palyer @ an affordable price target. Hopefully this will cause the other DAP guys to drop their prices in suit as flash was way too expensive vs HD.

Would have been nice if Apple could have made such a thin player with metal instead of plastic. that would have been real nice and classy, definitely would have set it apart from the pack.

I know if I was a recent mini or shuffle buyer I sure would be pissed with the nano being offered so soon, yet if I was a guy that waited to purchase, I would be quite pleased

Now maybe iaudio/cowon will introduce a larger capacity flash to replace my G3 since Apple has caught up to the rest of the market.

Nope, according to the photos of the inside, the memory is on a seperate board, so they just plug in the board needed for 2 or 4Gb.

The Nano is optimized for USB 2.0. USB 1.1 will be about 1/3 the speed. It took about 4 hours to do the initial loading of 930 songs. THe updates only take about 2-3 minutes.

Too bad there's not a Firewire option. :(

in terms of production etc. it is sometimes cheaper to do so.
i dont know the prices , but if this was the case buying a 2gb and enabeling the other 2gb :)

just an idea, so anyone care to open HIS/HER 2gb ipod and have a look if there are 2 flash memories a 2 GB?

:D

ON DApreview they have a trheead with a bunch of pics and linkss that show the internals of the nano

The Nano is optimized for USB 2.0. USB 1.1 will be about 1/3 the speed. It took about 4 hours to do the initial loading of 930 songs. THe updates only take about 2-3 minutes.
Four hours to do the initial load!? It took about 45 minutes for me.

I have USB 2.0 (1.33GHz 12" PowerBook), but the transfer rates I'm seeing are almost exactly 1.5MB/s = 12Mb/s = USB 1.1 full-speed.

What kinds of pricing are you getting in-store. I saw a deal here (http://www.macmall.com/macmall/families/ipod/default.asp?family=10&WTReferer=http://www.macmall.com/macmall/ipod/?WTReferer=http://www.macmall.com/macmall/&wt.mc_id=9303&wt.mc_id=9319) for $244 for a 4Gig Nano including free shipping, engraving, and a free FM transmitter with rebate.

That sound like a good price?

Why is everyone going goo-goo over this thing? There is nothing really innovative about the nano. I guess the American consumer is really behind in terms of DAP's. Apple finally catches up to the Korean DAP makers by offering a nicely featured product. It still is not as full featured as some other flash players. I give them credit for being the 1st to introduce a 4gb flash palyer @ an affordable price target. Hopefully this will cause the other DAP guys to drop their prices in suit as flash was way too expensive vs HD.

I agree that feature wise, it may not be as good as others. For me, the price made it a impulse buy range. I already liked the feature set on the iPod photo, and the nano has some other nice touches.

Would have been nice if Apple could have made such a thin player with metal instead of plastic. that would have been real nice and classy, definitely would have set it apart from the pack.

The silver part on the back is metal, like the full size ipods.

BTW - I found an iTunes plug-in that automatically imports album art. ^

I use a program called Album Cover Finder. There's a Mac and Windows version. It basically connects to Amazon's webservice to find the cover art. On the mac, it will auto fill your entire itunes library, if your ID tags are somewhat accurate, that costs extra though.

http://www.amphonicdesigns.com/albumcoverfinder/

BTW, I was able to fit about 920 songs and some of my photos (6,240) onto my nano. On my flight last night, I had a conversation with two FAs who were going to buy a shuffle or Mini.

The local Apple Centre won't give me the student discount on the iPod nano even though the Apple Education Store still offers it. Is this a common occurance?

From what I can tell, AppleCentre is an authorized reseller and is not owned or operated by Apple directly. This would be why any promotions or discounts offered by Apple through their web site might be different than those found at this location.

Well they're two totally separate companies, so whatever Apple does regarding promotions or discounts will not carry over to the reseller. It would be like CompUSA, Circuit City or Best Buy here in the US offering Apple products (or Toshiba or HP) with the same discounts available if ordering directly from these manufacturers. That's not the way it works.

They buy their inventory at one price and sell it to the end users at another. If they were to offer the discount, it would cut into their margins.

So AppleCentre really doesn't have a say in the matter. AppleCentre's profits and revenue do not feed into Apple's, since they're not a subsidiary or in any way financially affiliated with Apple.

The Canberra AppleCenter, if you check their web site, is actually a company called Mac1. It's not Apple. Not owned by Apple, and, while they sign a contract saying they will abide by a certain set of policies that makes them qualified as an authorized reseller, beyond that, their policies are their own.

:)
I really appreciate this tip. I am so clueless that I never would have thought to do this! I also found an iPod savvy 16 year old who has offered to help me when the Nano arrives :)

About 2 weeks ago, I finally caved and got a 4Gb IPod Mini (silver) and while I think the Nano is really cute, I don't see the necessity for changing... especially as I've pretty much exhausted my ideas for music on my IPod and have only 150 tunes on it. (Mainly downloaded existing songs from fav cds-- now if only there were a way of getting some songs that I have on old cassettes onto my computer & then onto my IPOD Mini.... ;) )

The 2GB unit uses two Toshiba 1GB Flash modules.

In 4GB models, the additional two 1GB modules are soldered onto a daughter card which is then attached to a connector on the main board. On the 2GB modules, the daughter card connector circuitry is present, but no connector is soldered.

Because that would disclose a whole lot more people to details of the product pre-announcement. This would greatly increase the risk of details being leaked.

Leaks dampen the impact of the announcement, which can affect sales, and they also make the stock price erratic. It also clues competitors in early, opening up the possibility that they might try to position one of their own announcements just before or after the release, which would also effect the out-of-the-gate success of the product by dilluting visibility.

Reviews of new iPod Nano accessories will probably show up here (http://www.ilounge.com) first.

XtremeMac (http://www.xtrememac.com) usually offers new accessories pretty soon after a launch.

You might also be able to find a generic style case with a belt clip made for cell phones and the like. It might be a little big, but chances are you could find one for pretty cheap to tide you over until the wave of iPod Nano accoutrements crashes down upon us. You could wrap the Nano in a hanky or something to keep it from bouncing around too much in the case.

Alternatively, it might fit in the key pocket of a pair of running shorts, but then people might wonder what your headphones are doing coming out from your shorts. :p

My Nano arrived today, a day earlier than promised, with my name engraved, and I am thrilled. I am a totally non technological person, and I was able to load my songs, language tapes, and an audio book in preparation for a trip I'm taking. I feel so accomplished. The only reason I ventured to try one was because of all the knowledgable people posting here, and their favorable comments.

I was able to rig up a makeshift case. It is a Radisson Seven Seas luggage tag from a cruise I took. I hooked one of those clips that hold I.D. badges on your shirt through the luggage tag strap slot. I put the Nano in upside down so that the earphones can come out the open end. The clear plastic of the luggage tag keeps it clean. I can just push on the plastic, and use the click wheel and the menu responds.

After repeated tries, I am unable to set the alarm clock, and must be doing something wrong, because I can't get it to work. I thought I was following the instructions, but apparently not.

The sound quality is exceptional, and I continue marvel how all that comes out of the tiny Nano.

I think Apple does its customer base a disservice by being so secretive about their product launches. Honestly they don't create innovative enough players to be so secretive. They make nice players with certain but in no way full featured. It is not like anyone is going to beat them to the market. People buy an Ipod because it is an ipod. The only thing that the nano has over other flash DAP's is that it is 4gb's of solid state memory at an awesome price point.

What in the world would one person need 3 different DAP's? I can understand having 1 high capacity HD and 1 flash player. My cowon/iaudio fulfills all of my DAP needs and I supplement my other needs with a portable CD player.

I think u hit the nail on the head with ipod having such a "loyal" following. The owners are loyal but don't seem to be too demanding and eagerly accept what ipod gives them.
Also I think the brilliance of apple marketing is that they create a " lifestyle" for their owners which is why one would go out and buy several different models of basically the same DAP along with the hundreds of dollars of accessories.

Not so different than what Starbucks did in turning coffee drinking into a lifestyle experience. People for decades were perfectly content to spend $.50 for a cup of coffee; now they eagerly spend $4 for the same cup of coffee because it is Starbucks. When I was younger the coffee that my grandmother made in a tin pot on the stove tasted a heck of alot better than the $5 swill I buy in a fancy cafe. Heck even Dunkin Donuts, 7-11 or quick check have good coffee for $1.50.

Check out The Apple Store (store.apple.com) for several options. Navigate to iPod accessories->power. There are wall chargers, car chargers, the iGo (a single unit for charging devices simultaneously, like laptop and phone, or phone and iPod, etc), external supplemental battery packs, etc.

The decision to upgrade to a nano from a mini (1st Generation) was certainly made easier because the warranty on my mini was about to run out. On a trip I had the dreaded file icon show up, indicating HDD failure, so spent that trip music-less and I don't fancy paying for it to get repaired if it's out of warranty.

I will continue to use my 30GB 3G simply because it has 25 odd GB of music on it and I play it through my stereo system at work. However for travel and for walking around town, the nano is it. I have installed it in a nice black skin (the fingerprints were terrible!), plugged in the Ety ER4P's and am loving it.

The small storage size is not a problem. I plan to have a couple of audiobooks and 10 or 15 albums on it (mostly stuff that I have bought and not had a chance to listen to) and to rotate the music regularly.

My favorite feature- it pauses if the headphones accidentally come out while it is playing. To me that says it all about Apple design - someone really thinks about these products. I expect to see this one in the permanent collection of MOMA.

I am way outclassed as a music junkie. I have 1.75 days of music on my iPod nano and it is just a little over half full.

Thanks for the mention of the skins - I ordered several from DecalGirl.

I know I often use that type of rationalization for upgrading my tech toys (er, cough, I meant productivity tools)

Stupid question # 5495499: Can I only charge the battery by plugging it into my laptop? What do I do if I go somewhere and don't plan on taking my laptop? Is there a battery charger I can buy? TIA!

I have a little wall wart that is basically a transformer with AC plugs on one side and a USB out on the other. I also hava a car lighter plug with a USB out on the back. I always have a USB charger cable with me, so those two small items pretty much cover me wherever I go and are completely device independant.

Here you go - $15 to your door : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5810755489

You can also be each part individually, but this seems like a good deal.

I have no interest in this, although I have purchased many items like this from the same company. Never a problem

OK, thanks to everyone here for convincing me that the Nano is for me. So, I am seeing on the internet that they are kind of in short supply. Any suggestions on the quickest (and reasonably cheap but I see there isn't more than a few $$$ difference online) way to get one. I am near GEG this week on business and will make a quick stop back home over the weekend before returning and would like to have it before I get back here.

I agree (partly) :)

The new powerbooks don't impress me, I'd prefer something that looked more like the good old Pismo G3 PB, nice and sturdy, and doesn't feel like it will break when you touch it.

As for the desktops; they have not changed much since the first blue/white G3; they look cooler but thankfully remain pretty much untouched.

There was something to say for the good old 6 color imacs, they really brought Apple back on the map; the new all-white machines don't impress me, Apple used to be a company of colors, now white is the new color I guess.

It's not about the color my friend, it's about what's (or not) inside.
I know they've been suffering because Moto that, IBM that, blah, blah.
But the display and graphic chip in a $3K Powerbook is much worse
than that in $250 PSP. Enough said.

Remember Palm? That was a company with one product. Everyone had one.
Where are they now? Apple is the one product company now.

Sync cables and other dock-connector accessories

The iPod nano uses the same dock connector port as the iPod mini and full-size iPod models, but the nano’s sync functionality differs in one significant way: Although it can both sync with your computer and charge via a USB connection, when connected via FireWire the nano charges but doesn't sync. So FireWire-based dock connector cables and other “docking” accessories that connect to your computer via FireWire will not be able to sync your iPod nano with iTunes. This is a shame, considering that FireWire 400 is faster than USB 2.0. It’s also particularly disappointing for owners of older Macintosh computers, many of which have FireWire ports but no USB 2.0 ports—their USB ports are of the slower 1.1 spec.

I got some skins at Decal Girl and some screen protectors. I'm waiting for the lanyard headphones and nanotubes.

How did you apply the skins? I bought an extra to play with. I'm glad I did because once you remove one it becomes unusable.

The best results I've had so far is to take the box the nano came in, cut off the lid that held the nano, remove the paper from the back exposing the hole the nano sat it.

There is now a hole all the way through the box. One side fits the nano perfectly, the other is a bit larger.

I covered the "perfect fit" side with a piece of cardboard.

I now take a skin, remove the adhesive, and place it adhesive side up in the hole in the box.

I now take the nano and drop it on top of the skin and everything lines up perfectly.

One caveat is if you are using a clear skin the result is slightly opaque because of the bits of air trapped underneath.

Remember to peel the paper away from the decal and not the decal away from the paper or the decal will curl.

and Scott, the Displex worked fairly well. My nano still looks pretty fresh. Perhaps I need to practive with the Displex a bit more.

A lot of the result depends on what you use to apply it with. I'm using a fairly thick lint free car polish cloth. You need something that doesn't absorb the polish too much yet can withstand the pressure.

Ipod fanboys are the best! They don't really care about specs or features all they truly care about are the scratched surfaces of their Ipods! I guess it shows the Ipod really is more of a fashion statement than anything else.

I love walking around NYC and seeing people hold their ipods out in front of them as they manipulate the click wheel, whilst I simply have my hand in my pocket and navigate my DAP with the joystick interface. I don't care about scratches and who see what type of player I listen to.

There are so many cases where "specs" dont cover the whole story. The software integration really is the issue with IPODs as far as performance. And fashion, of course. Look at Rolex for example.

Mine has scratches. I decided over the weekend to use a big piece of clear packing tape to cover the front and back. I can hardly tell that it's taped up. No air bubbles.

I think it's the color screen that has made me care about the scratches. My old B+W ipod had tons of scratches (and dents), but they didn't bother me at all.

The integration in IPODs and ease of use makes them better than the competition. Does the cool factor add to the price, sure, like with Rolex, or BMW or Mercedes or dozens of others. But the IPOD is different in that it is better than the competition. I have a drawer full of digital music players. My IPOD is in my backpack and my wifes is in her purse. My DAP(iaudio/cowon G3) has a 5 way joystick, so it is just a matter of memorizing which direction of the joystick corresponds with what function.

Apple Will Replace Damaged iPod Nano Screens
By NICK WINGFIELD
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
September 28, 2005

Apple Computer Inc., responding to complaints from users of its sleek new iPod nano music player, said it will replace defective screens that cracked too easily on the devices.

...

Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, said a "vendor quality problem" caused cracking on a small number of iPod nano screens, affecting "less than one-tenth of 1%" of the devices Apple has shipped. Apple's iPod nano warranty will cover devices with cracked screens, he said.

I mean, I can see skip forward, skip back, and pause, but you can do all that with an ipod in you pocket. If you need to remove the Ipod from your pocket, you probably need the screen.

I think the anti-ipod backlash is quite funny. It's become quite trendy among some to hate ipods. It seems like the ipod-haters are as fanatic as the ipod-lovers.

Actually I do have my music memorized. My DAP uses a file tree system so I know exactly what order my folders/albums are in.

Who said anything about being hating or anti-ipod? I used to own one, played with it for a while and gave it to my father as a gift. It just did not suit my needs.

having had the nano a bit, (no screen scratches here, must be in that 99% group!)

from a design standpoint, I dont like having the headphone plug on the bottom, since if you DO want to put it in your pocket you have to put it in HEAD first making it a sightly tighter fit and/or possible comes in contact with something in the bottom of the pocket.

Based on all the hype here, I bought a nano - via apple.ca since nobody had one in stock.

My Nano is coming via a slow boat from Shenzhen! Wish I had gone directly to Apple as they now have them in stock.

They go by air to Canada, so you should have it pretty soon. At least when you buy it over the Web you have the option of getting it personalized for free. For some that's worth the extra couple of days' wait.

enjoy it when it arrives!

just that since the cord is on the bottom of the unit, not a good idea to stick it in bottom first as that may lead to the cord snapping off

bummer

I either lost my new Nano, or had it stolen on a recent trip to Italy. :( It even had my name engraved on it, and my business card was with it. The first thought I had when I received it was how tiny it is, and how easy it would be to lose.

Any suggestions for carrying it to keep this from happening?

And, put a password on your phones and LT's of course. The new NANO has a keylock as well. Somebody, nefarious, who cannot get into it, might just return it first.

I was pleasantly surprised to have FedEx deliver my new Nano today – ahead of schedule, BUT I am now wondering if I have a dud  :(

I keep getting an error message “Attempting to copy to the disk iPOD failed. The disk could not be read from or written to.”
After the error message I can start the transfer up again. Music is transferring and will play on my iPod – I don’t know if the problem is on my laptop or iPod.
Has anybody experienced a problem like this before AND any suggestions on how to triage it??

I'm tempted to get one of these as a backup harddrive for my camera. It looks like I can get an adapter that will allow access directly to the cameras picture files.

If you're near Toronto, you could bring your iPod in to the Yorkdale Apple Store (http://www.apple.com/ca/retail/yorkdale/week/20050925.html). A Genius there can look at it to determine if it has a problem. Sometimes they're able to exchange it for a new one on the spot. Geniuses are in huge demand, especially on weekends, so it would be best to schedule an appointment, which you can do here (http://genius.apple.com/customer/?store=R120).

I'm not positive about Canadian Tech Support, but at least in the US, Tech Support is open during the weekend, so you may not have to wait until Monday.

Also, Apple's Web support (www.apple.com/support) is considered the best out there. I particularly like the Discussions section, where users offer advice to each other.

The camera adapter doesn't work with the nano. We use one with our 60 gig photo and it works for 8mp images just fine.

We have about 6 gigs of storage on our camera, though, so we rarely have to unload while on a trip.

From Apple's website, I downloaded the iPod updater.

This s/w "formats" the iPod and reloads the o/s. I did it once and have had no problems since!

If you don't mind doing it semi-manually, in iTunes click Edit->Show Duplicate Songs and it will show you only songs with dupe names.

Suprisingly, I have read no comment on how the IPOD's actually sound which is surely half the point of such a device?

I have a great interest in hi-fi - it is mostly Roksan separates and Acoustic Energy speakers (call me an audiophile, if you will). I have always hated all personal stereos, MP3's when I first listened to recordings three or four years ago certainly seemed to be 'missing energy and enthusiasm' unless sampled at at least 256KBps. However still not a patch on my vinyl collection, or even some good CD's.

Consequently, I would imagine the algorithms have improved over the last few years.

Technicalities aside, how does the IPOD Nano sound?

I would imagine the given headphones are not the best things to use (I have a nice pair of Grado headphones instead).

I listen to mine (Nano, 60gb photo and 20gb regular) mostly two ways. First in the car through a tape deck adaptor (BMW sound with harmon/kardon branded upgrade). But most of the listening is done with the Shure ec5 headphones.

Sound quality is totally dependant on the file encoding and bit rate rate. Personally when I "rip" from CD I use apple's lossless codec. I used to use MP3 at a very high bit rate because of compatablilty with other devices, but most things support apples codec now or I can transcode later.

here is the order of sound quality:
songsI've ripped in lossless - as good as CD
songsfrom apple's music store - as good as CD
songs I've ripped as high quality MP3
other MP3s at lower bit rates - really tend to sound out of phase some times

At home I use Apple's Airport Express and a toslink cable to send the PCM stream right to my denon amps... It sounds as good as CD or better but I'm not expert. I'm just waiting for SACD or DVD-A ripping and file support...

I was an early adopter of SACD, especially when the Rolling Stones Back Catalogue was released a few years ago. (SACD is better than DVD-A .... ;) ).

I didn't realise Apple had their own codec which certainly I have not heard and it seems I have done well in waiting until now to buy as I am sure things have improved over the last few years.

Sony's ATRAC4 system as adopted in its Mini-Disc players was years ahead of its time, they did a very a good 'QS' ranger recorder not long ago which was excellent. Consequently I was very tempted by Sony's IPOD equivalent offerings, however the size of the new Nano, plus the integrated display has caused me to seriously think about getting one.

A black one I think......

But non of that kit will do you any good at 35,000 Feet when you want a bit of tunes to chill to! :)

I have a 4th Gen Ipod and if the music is ripped at a good rate and played back through decent headphones then it is superb sound quality considering you have most of your music collection in the palm of your hand.

You can buy some pretty damn fine portable headphone amps if you want to power more than your basic in the ear headphones but I find the iPod drives my E3Cs and QC2s rather well.

Don't quite understand what the little dock adapter does, on the Apple website it claims that the nano dock is the same as the mini dock, and it does fit. The dock adapter looks more like it is for the regular ipod...

One of the early published reviews had the same question, they posted Apple's reply (paraphrased):

"The dock adaptor is for FUTURE assessories. You do not need the adapter to charge the iPod Nano."

I'm not for Apple because of the hip-bandwagon bit but DAMN that is a fine little toy. However, may I suggest to those who want one, to consider waiting a bit and picking up an iPod Mini instead since it will be discontinued? As Christmas approaches, they should start blowing those things out. I prefer flash devices to hard drives, but the Mini should be a fine little gadget until the next round of gadgets comes out and everything we already have is obsolete.

I still like my Creative Muvo FM since it has a VG radio section, but I have to admit the controls are a wee bit small. OTOH, it's the size of a small pack of gum and couldn't be easier to use when travelling; it was a lifesaver on a recent trip to Japan. I find these little things all sound pretty much the same, it's the quality of the headphones and the sampling rate that affects the sound the most.

Apple May Unveil New Video iPod During Next Week

By NICK WINGFIELD
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Apple Computer Inc., in a much-anticipated effort to expand its position in digital entertainment, next week is expected to introduce a version of the iPod capable of playing video and to begin selling music videos through its iTunes Music Store, according to people familiar with the matter.

A spokesman for the Cupertino, Calif., company declined to comment on "rumors and speculation."

Apple recently invited media to an event next Wednesday at the California Theater in San Jose, Calif. Apple has remained secretive about the event's nature.

Speculation about an Apple foray into video has been a pastime of high-tech analysts and Apple enthusiast Web sites. This past July, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple had started discussions with major recording companies about licensing music videos for sale through iTunes at $1.99 each. The report also said Apple had informed some media-industry executives about plans to launch a video iPod.

Apple's video iPod is expected to have a high-quality color screen that is larger than those on standard iPods, though the device is still small enough to fit into the palm of the hand or a pocket, according to people familiar with the matter.

A move into video is a risky bet for Apple that it can parlay the success of the iPod into a category where entertainment companies have yet to widely license their content. Roger Kay, an analyst at the market-research firm Endpoint Technologies Associates, says music videos may appeal to some consumers, but many others would prefer content with a story line such as movies or television shows.

While most popular music is now broadly sold on the Internet, TV shows aren't widely available for purchase, and are likely to remain so because of complicated rights issues. Apple has held discussions with media executives about licensing TV programs, but for now it appears to be concentrating on offering music videos, which it believes to be a natural evolution for a music-centric device like the iPod, people familiar with its plans say. In the past, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has criticized the appeal of watching movies on a small screen.
