Travel Technology - Where to pick up a transformer/converter?
Greetings all!
I am heading to GVA via FRA tonight. Being the disorganized person I am :), I just realized I would need a power transformer/converter for an external hard drive I use - one of those older models that need their own power source.
Does anybody know if this is something I can pick up in in FRA or GVA?
Thanks!

in GVA you might look for an "Inter Discount" store. Similar to a Best Buy.
Cant help you with FRA

Are you sure you need it? Check the disk, it probably does 220 and 110 already, it's been a very long time since they made them not dual voltage supplies.
If it does, all you need is a converter, any airport shop has them, radio shack for under $3, etc.

My external HD power supply works at 100-240 volts. If yours is like that, all you need is an adapter plug.
To buy one in Geneva, from the train station, go east on Rue des Alpes about 100 feet, just past the Warwick hotel, to the entrance on the left to a shopping center. Go down to the lowest level, to a supermarket that has a section on the left that has electrical connectors. You'll need an adapter plug for Switzerland that is slightly different from the rest of Europe--the pins are the same size, but sockets are recessed.

I hadn't noticed this difference. All my adapters - purchase in the U.S. work well in Switzerland, Italy, Germany, France and Austria.

Ungrounded adapters purchased in the US will usually work in Switzerland because they are slim enough to fit into the recessed sockets. Grounded adapters might or might not work. Visitors from other European countries with laptops that have grounded power cords have a big headache when they realize their plugs won't fit.
Here's what you need:

But this one won't work:

Thanks. Now I understand. In most places that I stay in Switzerland, the wall outlets are not recessed. I have had this problem with power strip extension cords there, though.

Thanks guys!
Cordelli - you are right, my Western Digitial external HD does take both 220 and 110.
