Im booking an SUV at LAX, at the time of rental i'll be 24 but i turn 25 during the rental and when i return it i'll be 25. I know im supposed to pay the underage surcharge but my question is, could i get away with just selecting the over-25 rate? There is a big difference in price... Under-25 rate is almost 3X the price.
How strict are they at checking age? I dont look under 25 though.

Don't they always look at your driver's licence? Isn't it there?
I would expect that the odds are nearly 100%.
You could try splitting it into two bookings, with the first ending and the second starting on your birthday.

Are you employed??
If yes, see if your employer has arrangements with rental outfits. Most big ger companies have deals that will get you a rental without underage surcharge.
Also, try Enterprise. They are by far most generous to under 25s

Avis has put into place safeguards on their screen to catch under 25 and under 21 drivers. The computer will NOT let you rent if your under 21/25 unless you have a matching AWD that allows for underage or pay the underage fee.
LMCKENNA, it will charge you the underage fee for the days that you are under 25. Once you turn 25, it should fall off for the day of your birthday and on. The only way you will beat the charge is to convince them to put the wrong birthday in the contract, the computer calculates it now. Or you could argue with the manager and see if they are willing to credit it off (since its so close).
