US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-2005 America West merger) - upgrade unavailable--should I check in online?

Anyone have any advice? My husband and I, both CP, are flying SFO/PHL on Monday, Sept. 4 (Labor Day), flight 82. Upgrade is "unavailable" at the 7 day window. CP desk just told me there are 5 FC seats and more than 5 CPs on the waitlist. She advised online check 24 hours before, but the last time this happened to me they told me NOT to check in online since they had no control once you do that. Very confusing, but what should we do? Any thoughts? I don't fly domestic very much so I'm not sure the best way to play the system on this one.

You should absolutely checkin online as close to 24 hours as possible. Then you have to ask to be added to the list immediately once you get to the airport.

What you were told is correct: once you check-in on line, you're off the wait list for an upgrade and they do not "have any control" at that point to UG you at the last minute. Given there's only five seats left and more CPs than seats, I'd recommend you check-in on line at the 24 hour mark exactly. There's no way you're going to upgrade in advance at this point so no point in remaining on the list.
