I recently closed my US Amex account and must redeem my points. I have enough airline points and the hotel points don't seem very valuable. I live in Canada so they will no ship merchandise to me. I was thinking the Dell cert to get a flat screen TV but the certs have limited use. Perhaps the Home Depot certs?

Any comments or advice on the relative value of the various redemption options?

A lot of ways to use it.

For the exact amount, 3-day golf school in Sea Pines Resort (Hilton Head) :D

If you are planning for a vacation, some 3nts package for two people in Mexico or Costa Rica for all-inclusive resort will be good (~150K).

Travel certificate: Tauck, Abercrombie & Kent.. etc for 100K pts = 1K$. Hotel certificate is my favorite. They don't have block out date like some hotel reward program has.

Gift certificate: Gap, Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers etc. All about 10K per 100$.

Or cold hard cash 20K = 100$.

You can see by getting the travel or gift certificate will get you more bang for your point than getting cash will.

If you have your heart set on getting electronic stuff, why don't you get some Sharper Image cert. too.

Personally, I will use it for the travel stuff because that is what I live for. However, gift certificate will come in handy during christmas, birthday times. ;)

Certs and merchandise are a total waste of Amex points. Getting 100 bucks for 20K is also a major ripoff.

Airline miles would be my 1st choice, hotel points would be second. Probably the best use will be the following (maximization of value, but somewhat grey). Transfer your points to Southwest Airlines and the tickets you get are almost like cash. ;)

You can consult the Southwest forum for further information. This will probably net you in the neighbourhood of 1200 bucks for every 100,000 points you transfer. (remember I am only offering a suggestion as the barter/sale/purchase of frequent flyer miles is frowned upon by the airlines)

You also have the option of transfering your points to Aeroplan and redeeming a non-flight award which can be shipped to a Canadian address.

Are you able to transfer points to BMI DC ? With UK based cards it is possible . If yes please PM me, I have an idea.

Get Home Depot Gift Cards and sell them on ebay. They should net you around 90% of their face value.

Key is getting value for your points. Gift cards are worth at most 1 cent per point. 90,000 to 120,000 gets you an internationl BC ticket worth between $1,500 and $8,000!!! I'd go for airline points if I were you. When traving internationally, my points have been worth 4 or more cents each.
