US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-2005 America West merger) - Coke or Pepsi which one??

View Full Version : Coke or Pepsi which one??

I have heard that HP has Pepsi on it's flights and we all know US uses coke. Who will carry over after all and all is complete? I don't like Pepsi products. Sprite is my drink of choice. Will the two beverage companies have a bidding war who gets the contract for the new US Airways?

. . . Will the two beverage companies have a bidding war who gets the contract for the new US Airways?

Count on it. In a prior life I worked for a key vendor to HP. Even back in the day when they were making money (and there was such a day, once upon a time), they were notorious for hammering every penny out of their vendors. I've heard it is worse now, which isn't hard to imagine. Lowest price will almost certainly prevail.

I was thinking this was a joke thread at first then found myself thinking "I actually DO care"... I don't drink many cokes (sorry, soda or pop for some of you) but when I do a coke is a coke... maybe its a southern thing...
Growing up anything carbonated was a coke (this includes sprite, that orange stuff, etc), its that ingrained.

I personally hope that Coke prevails as I'm a Diet Coke guy. When on HP I drink Diet 7 up or perhaps a Diet Dr. Pepper....

Definitely a southern thing. I spent 6 months living in Jackson, MS. I found it very funny when going out to eat with co-workers the conversation would go like this:

co-worker: "I'll have a Coke."
server: "What kind would you like?"
co-worker: "Root beer please."

me: "I'll have a Coke."
server: "What kind would you like?"
me: "uh, Coke."

I concur- the other conversation pretty common only in the south is:

Southerner: "I'll have a Coke please"
Server: "Is pepsi OK"
Southerner: "No, water please"

In most of the country, they would just bring you a pepsi and not tell you it wasn't coke. But there is definitely a difference.

From an old SNL skit with John Belushi... "Cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger... Pepsi, no Coke. ;)

It was late 70s... all you CP kiddies weren't born yet. ;)

I prefer Pepsi One, then Diet Pepsi, Diet Dr. Pepper... then Diet Coke if I'm desparate. I have tried the Coke Zero, and it's not bad. Tastes like Pepsi One.

Now, do you prefer your diet plain, with lemon or with lime (assuming the fruit is available, that is)? I'll do the fruit if available, but it's not a requirement.

It's worse in Boston. Everything was/is a "tonic" (even listed on the signs over the grocery aisles). Imagine recceiving a tonic water the first time I ventured out of Boston

P.S. It's Coke, no Pepsi for me now :D

Pepsi is the best. It's not "watered down Coke." It's sweeter than Coke. My husband who "LOVED" Coke refused to drink Pepsi, but we ran out of Coke and he started drinking the Pepsi and liked it. He only prefers Coke with his Maker's Mark...something about the Coke and whiskey flavor that makes his day.

Pepsi is akin to carbonated corn syrup left out in the sun.

Keep the Coke!
Keep the diet coke--and the lemons to go with it.

I already have to bring my own diet coke on UA. The funny thing is that there's always at least one or more other pax who are jealous. The "good" FAs take it from me and pour it for me in the galley.

In the UK, a Sprite/7Up-like product is called lemonade. Imagine my surprise when on a BA flight I see lemonade listed as a beverage and then ask for a lemonade and vodka. YUCK--Sprite and vodka is not good! Great chuckle with the FA.

You don't like teeth-rotting fizz, but you want even more teeth-rotting non-fizz? That stuff's not much healthier than Coke.

From http://my.webmd.com/content/article/88/100020.htm?action=related_link:
"The result: Soft drinks like Sprite, Mountain Dew, and Arizona Iced Tea were especially harmful to tooth enamel, reports von Fraunhofer. Tap water, root beer, brewed black tea, and black coffee all showed minimal enamel damage."

Unsweet tea with some lemon, please. Must be the yankee in me... I really hate having to specify UNSWEET tea when eating out here below the Mason-Dixon Line.

And if the choice is Lipton vs Nestea... definitely Lipton!!

Lets not forget the politics of Pepsi & Coke, and how one company would rather fund terrorist countries and the other company would rather stand up for democracy....

"Coca-Cola was temporarily expelled from the Arab world because of its ties with Israel..." article with quote (http://www.wzo.org.il/en/resources/view.asp?id=26&subject=30)

Pepsi decided not to sell in Israel so it could sell to countries that help the 9/11 hijackers. You decide what you want to drink, and that belch may just come back to haunt you!

My comments do not belong in Omni... I was just pointing out there is more to picking Coke or Pepsi then meets the toungue.... I can see if you want to discuss the politics of it, it goes in Omni, but there is more to the picture and that needs to be noted.

If the moderator wants to move it to Omni that is fine, or perhaps you are the moderator?

I believe Dr. Pepper is actually unique and that they are owned by neither coke nor pepsi (same goes for 7-up i believe). However, they are typically bottled by the coke or pepsi bottler, depending on area. I am not sure which bottler serves USAir, but it is probably the same as whoever serves Arlington, though you think the bottler could do it cheaper at a hub. Coca Consolidated, the #2 Coke bottler in US(behind Atl Coke Enterprises?) is based in CLT, and they bottle DrP and DDrP, at least there anyway. I do not recall US ever having Dr P or D DrP though. Of course, I drink neither one.

People still have a choice. Growing up I never went to Burger King because they were a Pepsi franchise--ditto Pizza Hut. Don't discount the the value of the retail sales, there's a choice there, too. Part of the sales in retail is the choice consumers make about that retailer.

And as others have noted here (including myself), when Pepsi is the choice (either on UA or at a Marriott), we Coke drinkers just bring our own.

There's always a choice.

Pizza Hut, KFC, and Taco Bell were owned by Pepsico (now owned by Yum! brands), that gives you an answer as to why they serve Pepsi products. They may have switched to Coke. I don't know since I don't patronize these establishments.

LOL, I grew up in Michigan and it was POP for me too. Now in AZ, so call it soda. Here's a website dedicated to what Americans call the "fizzy drink" (http://www.popvssoda.com/)

BTW, Beverage Digest reports sales of these drinks. Last time I looked, Pepsi outsold Coke in grocery stores (where people have a choice) but Coke had higher revenues due to Pepsi losing a lot of restaurant business when they owned Pizza Hut, KFC, Taco Bell etc. which they later spun off as Yum! Brands. Pepsi is slowly picking restaturants back up. Pepsi's market value is $6.93B to Coke's $399.65M (PBG & COKE tickers) Coke is getting slammed by the market for execution concerns.
