From Travel Weekly (http://www.travelweekly.com/articles.aspx?articleid=47906) (registration required):

"When America West and US Airways complete their merger this fall, the combined airline will integrate the two carriers’ vacation-packaging operations as US Airways Vacations, bringing in-house some of the programs that used to be outsourced to the Mark Travel Corp., according to Beth Nickerson, America West’s director of marketing."

"“Our company is a low-cost carrier, which means we tend to do things in the most economical way. That usually means to do the product yourself rather than to outsource.”

Still, Nickerson acknowledged it may be more economical to outsource for destinations where America West has not previously flown or offered vacation packages. The companies are in preliminary discussions about which operations will be outsourced to Mark Travel, she said."

Running an outsourced call center(or a few) with hundreds of low wage workers is far different than managing a vacation desk that requires a handful of knowledgable employees to coordinate vacation packages which, on average, generate descent profit margins due to all big wholesale discounts hotels like to give airlines to be offered as an option in a package.

:D ...great point. I have never used the Vacations staff, but I've always been impressed with the Vacations and US Airways Golf offers...hoping to take them up on one of the English/Irish/Scottish vacations one day...

I took the usairways vacation package to the Bahamas. Stayed at Atlantis.
Decent price until you got there and had to buy meals!
