MilesBuzz! - Booking (2) one-way tickets instead (1) roundtrip for more miles.

If purchasing tickets on-line and the price of (2) one-way tickets totaled the same as (1) roundtrip ticket, why not book the (2) one-way tickets to get double the amount of on-line purchase miles?

Maybe others are already doing this but it just dawned on me as I was about to book a roundtrip on AS. Roundtrip PDX-OAK was $237.50. When I put in a one way PDX-OAK, it was $118.75 and OAK-PDX was also $118.75. The dates for the one-ways were the same as needed for the roundtrip.

I posted this on the Alaska board since that's where this idea came up but I wanted to see if this would work on other airlines.

I believe United's policy is to grant 500 bonus miles for a [nonstop] one-way, 1000 bonus miles for a round trip.

If you have a lot of segments, you might end up paying a little more since each reservation is subject to its own $18 limit on XF taxes.

Also, AA seems to have a limit of 1000 miles per day on booking bonuses, even if you're flying on 2 reservations.

If you have two one-way tickets and need to change you flight home there will be a new ticket you will need to purchase, not the $100 change fee. I think its good to avoid two one-way tickects for this reason.
