US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - UA 1P using DS00087, is it possible?

I haven't flown US in a couple of years and never TA. I am traveling late October to MAD and have a friend on the east coast whom has two DS00087. Could I use them and what is the pecking order of day of departure upgrades? I am on a "W" fare. Sorry if this has been mentioned before but I looked through all the threads and all the upgrade questions seem to relate to domestic only. Thanks in advance :)

In theory, the pecking order is:
US1
all other star top teir
US2
all other star mid-teir/gold
US3
all other star bottom-teir
nobody
(or, the same as the standard upgrade order, or so I was told)
As for who can use the 0087, anyone who has one on any paid fare. I upgraded a V fare to LGW just last week. Remember to call a day before to meal list.

My friend mentioned this, does this mean if I don't I don't get to eat? Do I call the number that is on the back of the voucher? I see the order is the same as on UA. I hope I remember. I am starting in ORD, should I upgrade then? I wouldn't want to use his upgrade for just the ORD-PHL segment. Sorry for all the questions
Edit: cause I am lame ;)

If you don't call you don't get upgraded. No one allowed unless a meal is ordered first. Yes, you just call the number on the back to be meal listed. They will upgrade you in ord only if they can upgrade you at the transatlantic at the same time.

Great, thanks for all the info. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Not true. I have been upgraded many times without meal listing. It probably depends on the destination.

Right--what happens is, you get the upgrade IF they happen to have enough meals for envoy class. You've been lucky so far. The only way to guarantee a meal is to get on the meal list---thus a safety insurance for you. I have actually seen this happen to the poor guy in front of me on a PHL-CDG flight. He was not meal listed and they did not have enough meals. They would not let him upgrade, even though there was a seat available and he had a legitimate upgrade. The seat flew empty that night. I'm not actually sure what the harm is in having a coach meal in first..can anyone enlighten us on the rationale behind the "no meal, no seat" policy? Thanks!

Is the meal request tied to the requesting passenger?
If 10 people asked for an upgrade and there were ten seats available but only 8 had done a meal request, is it the 2 who didn't call, or are there just 8 meals and it's first upgraded gets the meal on down the line?

The meal listing is important if the cabin will not go out full. If you don't list, there is a chance you don't upgrade.
Meal listing does not in any way assure an upgrade.

It also begs the question of what FF# you'll be traveling under. I have never been successful using any District Sales (DS) upgrades when flying under my United Mileage Plus number. I have been told that I must fly with my DM number only.
It's possible that in the last year they've changed the rules, but if not, you may have a tougher time using your upgrade with a MP# in the record.

I use them all the time with my MP status, just be nice. I've even been known to pass off an expired one here and there too :) Smile, play nice and you'll get a long way - especially if there is room!

Traveled with those using 0087's who are UA 2P and using there MP #. No hassle at all.

It is an upgrade certificate that is good for one person, one way trans atlantic.
It can be used with any fare. They can be found on a certain auction site. Some people get them from travel agents.
Search for trans atlantic upgrades and you will get more info (or ta upgrades)

I have been told it's first come first served, I imagine by status, then time then fare paid. Would it behoove me to check-in with US at SFO which is where I am starting my trip. I am doing UA on an award SFO-ORD, then US ORD-PHL-MAD, and the records aren't crossed because UA & US say they can't do it
