For those who have been away from the beach/marina bars on JVD...how travelable is the island by road? Can you walk from one end to the other? I know it is only 4 miles square - but do you need a carif you stay on island?

The roads are very small and windy...I wouldn't say you'd need a car or even be able to hire one on JvD!

I do not recall ever seeing a vehicle there. I have walked the full length of the main street in Great Harbor, and back down the side streets. Each one seems to me to end up as a goat trail after 100 meters. For taxi:

Taxis. Locally, Bun's Tequila Sea Taxi (495-9281) and Gregory's Brat water taxi costs $5 per person for local trips in a center console boat and Bun's (495-9281) and George's land taxi (495-9253) costs the same for a trip to White Bay. Walking to White Bay takes about 20 minutes--see White Bay Walk. It's longer and a higher fare to Little Harbour.

also:

Up until March of 1996, the only way to get to these harbours from White Bay was by water taxi. However, we now have a paved road, and access to the rest of the island is much easier.

Guess it was 10 years ago that I walked around the place.

Be careful when you hire a taxi - - make certain that the rate is agreed upon up front. And as you may know, taxi rates in the BVIs are per person, not per trip.
