I have a 4 night stay at the Hilton Noga Cannes in France this Sunday. Yesterday I called the Diamond Desk and wanted a copy of the reservation e-mailed to me. Upon receiving this, I noticed that all my preferences are noted in the comments section (High floor, away from elevator, bed preferences, smoking preferences, etc). At the very end was written DIA UPGRADE IF AVAIL.

I was wondering if so many comments will cause too much harm? I mean a person reading all that might not get to the Upgrade part or they might think "Well, he wants a room away from the elevator on a higher floor but our junior suite is on the lower floor and close the elevator, etc".

What does everyone think of this? Should I ask for all the other comments to be removed? Any other comments that should be written that have worked for others? I am going with my gf and have heard someting about someone adding their gf/wife, etc name on the comments at this particular hotel??

I have similar comments (NS, low floor, away from elevator) and it hasn't stopped properties from offering me suites and executive rooms that violate one or more of my requests. I think they know most people will opt for the upgrade over most other preferences. I have also been put in bad rooms that honor my requests and been grumpy as a result. I was next to the guest laundry in an ES last month - very noisy.

The first thing they look at is status to see what upgrades are available for the day, then they can worry about the comments.

On a recent check-in at the Hilton Cincinnati, as the front desk was confirming the standard room that I had reserved, I inquired if there were any Junior Suites available as an upgrade. The desk employee responded with a flat NO. However, the employee next to her mentioned that there were some available, only they were smoking rooms.

Smoking v non usually commands a great deal of weight, so I don't know how much is given to the other preferences. It would seem that fewer preferences would provide desk staff the ability to find a better upgrade.

I haven't changed my profile yet, but I may do so. I'd be happy to take a suite on a lower floor, instead of a standard room on the upper floors.

If you don't like the room, you can always ask what alternative rooms they have? Or ask before even checking out the room? They usually try to please.

I am often offered several diff options when upgrades are available. Such as a jr suite on the lower floor or a corner room on the high floor at the Millenium Hilton in NYC. Once in a while an upgrade is not available on my first stay, but almost always moved to a jr suite the next night.

Well.. I just logged into my account to get a print out of my confirmation for tomorrow's stay and found that my room description has been changed to "King Junior Suite". ^

Hopefully, its one with a sea view.. but I don't wanna call and ask.. (that may be pushing it) :D

You guys do know that all those preferences are selectable in your profile? they probably see those for EVERY customer they get. And, if you don't like the preferences, feel free to login to hhonors.com and change them.

I've been told, by more than one hotel clerk that flexibility is key. If you're insistent on a king with a view, you might be missing out on an awesome double/double with a Jacuzzi or something.

Actually, Hilton.com allows you to choose which of your preferences are most important to you. For example, in my form, non-smoking is clicked as "Most Important to Me" (as opposed to room location, proximity to elevator, etc).

But posters have made a good point... I'm going to change everything aside from non-smoking to "no preference" since I really don't care about being on a high floor or not.

Thanks for the reminder. I hadn't looked at the room preferences in my profile in a while, and decided to do the same as you did: keep "non-smoking" in there, but change the rest to "no preference." ^
