Man says he forgot pipe bomb was in luggage
Charged with trying to take device on plane, he says it was meant for fun

OKLAHOMA CITY - An Oklahoma man told federal investigators he forgot a pipe bomb he built for fun was in his luggage when tried to board an airplane, according to court documents released Thursday.

Charles Alfred Dreyling Jr., 24, was charged Thursday with trying to carry the bomb aboard a Delta Airlines flight from Oklahoma City to Atlanta on Wednesday, according to the documents.

Do you honestly believe his story and find him nothing more than "stupid"?

"Honestly officer, I was going into this bank for my own business and just forgot I had a sawed-off shotgun hidden under my coat"

Interestingly enough, I do.

In a strange way it resonates with how I feel about the TSA shoe fetish. I wish them luck at catching the bad guys but it pisses me off that I am imputed to be a "bad guy" with their approach to screening.

I find it strange anyone would make a pipe bomb "for fun".

This is one of those things that makes me laugh...even though it's not funny.

You never built a spud gun out of schedule 40 PVC pipe?
You never played with fireworks?
You never had to blow up a tree stump?

Blowing things up, where no one can get hurt, in an open field, where no laws are being broken is, quite frankly, a LOT of fun! Guys play with fire, guys play with things that go bang, this does not stupify me in any way.

But then again, I don't try to bring my spud gun to O'Hare with me. I don't try to park my Cessna at the Home Depot. There is a time and a place for everything and the airport is not the place for your weekend explosives.

The BIGGER problem is that this guy is allowed to breathe precious air, has the right to vote, and will eventually be on a jury becuase he's surely too stupid to get out of it.

While we can't yet know for sure, there are any number of people who defy any notion of authority, and that could be the case here. It is a secret psychological thrill to "get away" with breaking the rules. It's also incredibly immature, and occasionally dangerous.

The more publicity incidents like this get... especially if he gets a nice long time in a prison cell to learn about the differing levels of authority that can be exterted over an individual, depending on the choices he makes... the better.

Well, he was from Oklahoma.

(And, as I duck behind the nearest cover, I want to note that I'm merely quoting a guy in my office who grew up near Tulsa and earned his degree from Oklahoma State)

I would guess that this guy will probably be convicted of a felony, which would disqualify him from jury service in most states...

My god people are stupid.

I learned that a few years ago at one of my customer service jobs...

people really are stupid.

I also think he forgot the pipe bomb was in there. When I was a teen we'd make dry-ice bombs for laughs and stuff... never destroyed anything cept the field we blew it up on and a few old people's sleep at 5pm :D

I also had a potato gun which my friends and I went out to the old, decommissioned airbase and would shoot various veggies and fruits out of it.. We shot a potato against a tree... was like sand  those things were fun FWIW.

I mean I don't think this guy's bright in the least bit, but nonetheless, I think he's dumb enough to forget that he had a pipe bomb in his bag.

What is a "dry ice" bomb?

What is a "dry ice" bomb?

MisterNiceYou put chips of dry ice into a two liter soda bottle. Put the lid back on the bottle, and as the dry ice melts, it turns into gaseous carbon dioxide. When pressure builds high enough, either the cap will come off or the whole bottle will burst. It's very loud.

I assume there are other ways of making dry ice bombs.

I sure missed out on something in Chemistry class! :D
