Six weeks away due to a six week summer home in New York.

First flight was from FLL to JFK. No problems whatsoever. Had a nice exit row seat.

If I gave a six week trip report of nothing, I'd be typing into tomorrow afternoon, so we'll cut down to my delay rant.

Albany to Baltimore was just fine. But I am outrageously pissed off at the incompetence of the airlines and airports. Now, I'm not one for finer points, so it probably doesn't come down to them, but the airlines get more flights for cheap prices going. I'll gladly pay more money to get flights with better food and better service to come on time, even if that means cutting down on flights. Listen to this one: I arrived at Baltimore/Washington International with about 45 minutes to spare before my flight to Ft. Lauderdale. Or so that's what I thought.

DELAYED was the status report at gate B16. With a flight departure of what was supposed to be 1:15, I was going to go and get some Quizzno's for the plane ride back home. But, I was told that the plane was delayed "until further notice" due to mechanical problems. Mechanical problems, my ..., I thought at the time.

I went to get my food, ate right outside of Quizzno's, and walked back to gate B16 for a status report. the flight should arrive at 3:00 PM. A two hour delay, but fairly tolerable. I'd be home just in time for a nice Chinese dinner at the restaurant "Gary Woo's Asian Bistro", which serves the best damn beef out there. They finally announce that the plane from Providence, RI to here will not be arriving until 3:00, prompting a 3:15 PM departure. Right.

Fifteen minutes later. I inquired the flight status again, only to be told that there was an estimated 4:15 departure rate from here to Florida, and that the plane had not taken off yet. I went to take a crap.

By the time I was done with that, and finished reading an article in ESPN Magazine, it was announced that the plane should be arriving from anywhere from 3:30 to 4:30, depending on weather conditions. Now I'm steaming.

As it turns out, we leave at around 4:05 for a flight full of turbulence. I met a couple that also lived in Boca Raton on the plane and sat in front of them. The flight back was mostly booked.

But this just about proves that airlines are now full of bull**** and lies and none of the stuff they tell you is true. Once in the air, we were told that the flight was three hours late due to PROVIDENCE BEING OVERCLOGGED. I'm sorry if I sound like a drunken, raging fool, but I was starving by the time I got back to Boca, am watching the World Series of Poker 2005 on ESPN2 (and being infuriated by the lousy commentators), and currently, I'm having a bad bout of my mild insomnia. But please tell me, how do you manage to get a flight delayed three hours because of too many planes in the air, not enough landing/takeoff room, and incompetent ATCers. In Ft. Lauderdale (when I was leaving for Israel), they were literally firing off planes one by one. Once one was out of sight, another would be retracting its landing gear. But apparently, it was one plane every fifteen minutes in Providence. Maybe it's Song being so efficient and Southwest, US Air, and American Airlines having flights delayed for real reasons, passengers with lost baggage, or other reasons, but it sure seems that if busy, over-stuffed Ft. Lauderdale can fire off airplanes like missiles from a seeker launcher (er...yeah), small-time airports like Providence can prevent themselves from having flights delayed by three hours. :(

Sounds to me like a mix of bad weather in New England if not in the whole northeast mixed with a bit of a mechanical delay somewhere in the system. Welcome to the world of modern air travel. :)

Do keep in mind that PVD is very close to BOS which could have influenced the delays and is under the transatlantic arrival routes into JFK which could have effected traffic at PVD. ATC management is very complex and is a great way to prove the old saying "A butterfly flapping its wings in PHX can change the weather in PEK." A bad thunderstorm in for example MIA/FLL/PBI can have a trickle down effect and wreak havoc across the country. If you don't believe me why do you think that the FAA is so interested in the whole runway fight at FLL.

Wow. :D That's kind of out of my league, you know? There was no bad weather Florida at the time. It might have been weather delaying everything; there was one of those famous 5 minute thundershowers up in the Northeast that passed us by while waiting at the gate.
