Dear all,
Here is another Carfield’s trip report. Well this is also my first trip report after my recent purchase of a Canon IXUS 700 digital camera, and from now on, I am able to post the link to my pictures’ album, as the same time of the written report. I guess I will write less and let you read more. Here is my recent trip to Taipei. It sounds pretty ordinary but my return is on the brand new Boeing 777-300ER by EVA Air. I flew on its second day of operation and the new bird definitely had the new bird smell. Unfortunately, I could only take pictures of the business class cabin because the flight was a bit shorter than normal. But the new bird is definitely a great addition to EVA Air and the Boeing 747s definitely look pale in comparison. Here is the detail report:

Well the day started with my god-grandmother forgetting her passport… well since she left relatively far away, we really had little chance to get on this original flight. For some of you who live in HK and Taiwan, there was a typhoon last weekend and some morning flights were cancelled. Also it was a Friday and we were traveling with a party of seven. We had to take the last flight of the day at 9pm, instead of the 3:30pm flight we booked. Anyway, thanks for the efficient and friendly ticketing agent, we were rebooked quickly. Well we spent lots of time at Virgin Clubhouse, in which BR also uses. The new bar was nice and there were attendants helping us with drinks and snacks. Both BR and VS maintain separate food menus. There were also three computers to use.
For plane spotting, here is the list of planes I saw:
SQ 744 9V-SPG (5pm arrival from SIN)
LX 343 HB-JMB, BA 744 G-CIVK/VT, VS 346 G-VATL SYD, AF 772 F-GSPR, NZ 763 ZK-NCY
Well the flight was pretty full in Y, but J was okay. We occupied the aft section of the J cabin in the upper deck. The Boeing 747’s seats are relatively ancient and legroom was pretty restricted. The leg rest was too short and I really think it must not be comfortable to fly it across the Pacific Ocean. Well since we are using R/W25L today, taxing took a while. Flying time was an hour and twenty-seven minutes with a cruising attitude of 37,000feet. We took off at 9:18pm. Short subject including news and TW tourist information began soon after takeoff, as well as meal. BR adopted a CX style – first trolley with beverage and appetizer tray, and second, entrée trolley – you can view the entrées before picking your choice, and finally tea/coffee. Here is the wine list and menu transcript:

The flight was over quickly and we landed on 10:45pm at R/W24. It was quite windy out there, but the rain had ceased.

The return was definitely more exciting, as it was the second day of operation of Boeing 777-300ER. There are Boeing’s engineers and entertainment system engineers flying with the flight. I guess they will be around for a while to ensure the smooth operation for the 77W. The load was light in J and Y. The flight began with a slight delay of departure due to the late arrival of the aircraft from Bangkok. There were rain and thunderstorms during the afternoon hours. Traffic to the airport was pretty bad. It took an hour and twenty minutes to get to the airport. Thankfully we left early. Check in was smooth and the Evergreen lounge was the same as usual. We headed to C3 early. Due to my godparents using the wheelchairs, we were the firsts to board the flight. The new plane was beautiful with the new car smell. The F/As were in good spirits. Unfortunately I could not report back the new elite or economy cabin, and there were no pictures. But J class was fine. The entertainment system was AVOD and Touchscreen with improved entertainment menus and more user-friendly screens than A330s. However, there is still a slight delay on reacting to your commands. So please be patient with the system. The seats were similar to A330 in terms of recline and various functions – only minor changes. The width was a bit better because it was a six abreast arrangement. The preferred seats are the bulkhead row of 6, but no carryon storage space as well as the new magazine storage design. The new bathrooms were twice as large as a typical coach bathroom. Well you can tell from my pictures.
Pre-takeoff routine of beverage, newspapers, menus, and wine list distribution rounds carry out as usual. Due to our late boarding, F/As try to make up times. Flying was a quick hour and ten minutes with a cruising attitude of 39,000feet. It was too short if you ask me. We took off from R/W24 at 6:45pm, and here is the wine list and menu transcript:

I had the chicken entrée, which was nice and the quantity and quality seem to be better than CX. My sister had the BR’s version of Book the Cook. For flights ex-TPE, when you prebook your entrees from Taipei, there are a number of addition entrée choices that you can pick from. It is like SQ’s Book the Cook, but only available when you use the pre-select entrée on line. My sister had the sea cucumbers with seafood fried noodles and vegetables. She said that it was delicious and the presentation looked fine. The bread selection includes garlic bread, soft twist roll, and ciabatta rolls. Well throughout the flight, I had to help my parents and godgrandparents with their TV and seats. All I can say was that the flight was too short me to enjoy all the amenities, and the F/As are more rushed on this flight. It is definitely a great way to fly to London soon. Let hope that BR will join OW or Skyteam soon so there are more incentives for me to fly BR! I definitely look forward that 77W will be used to the US/Canada soon. We began descent soon at 7:27pm, and we landed on R/W25R at 7:55pm. We parked at gate 36 shortly after.
