In-laws have decided to go to New Orleans for three days and have given me the (joyful :( ) task of giving them tips on which restaurants to go to, which places to visit and tips in general. I can only describe them as wonderful people, but a bit on the simple and conservative side, thinks spending $80 on a meal is too much. Can anyone give me ideas on telling them where to go? I know hurricanes are out of question...Cafe Du Monde a must, where else can I suggest they go in the French Quarter? Also, what sightseeing tours should they do? They will be staying at Le Pavillion.

Any ideas and suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

D.

I'm in NOLA right now. Right up the street from Le Pavillion. The hotel can set them up with tours. They might enjoy the plantation tour that includes both Laura and Oak Alley plantations. These two plantations are of different genre. Laura is a Creole plantation, and Oak Alley is an Anglo plantation. Both tours are very good, I especially like Laura. The slave quarters at Laura burned down last year.

As for restaurants, my taste tends to be expensive, so if $80 is too much, I am afraid I can't help you there.

The Old Coffee Pot, in the Quarter right next door to Pat O'Brien's. Great gumbo, and the prices are not too outrageous.

Brigstens is a genuinely quality, but homey restaurant with an acclaimed chef that used to have a prix fixe 3 course special that was an extraordinary value ($16.95) on Tu-W-Th if you came early. Call and see if it's still ongoing. As a bonus they can get there taking the St Chas. streetcar!
