Finally an improvement to earning airbucks on trips with combination of NZ and partner airlines.
Note the quote below appeared in a footnote and was not promoted in the main part of the article.
** Airline Partner accrual levels are based on each individual sector travelled rather than your journey between origin and destination. Where your itinerary to London via Asia consists of a combination of Air New Zealand and Airline Partner flights, you'll earn at the Air New Zealand rate for Air New Zealand flights and the Airline Partner rate for flights operated by our Airline Partners
For example:
A journey in Business Class between Auckland and London consisting of an Air New Zealand flight to Singapore and a Singapore Airlines flight to London will earn as follows:
* Auckland - Singapore (Air New Zealand): 210 Airpoints Dollars
* Singapore - London (Singapore Airlines): 110 Airpoints Dollars
Total Airpoints Dollars earned: 320 Airpoints Dollars.
A journey in Business Class between Auckland and London on Air New Zealand via either Hong Kong or Los Angeles will earn you 370 Airpoints Dollars
(emphasis mine)
The changes to airbucks earning for Asia flights is from 23 October 2006 (just before the new AKL-HKG-LHR service - why penalise those travelling Labour weekend?). Not sure if this change to earning on mixed itinerary flights is effective from the same or other date. The current T&Cs (http://www.airnz.co.nz/airpoints_tc.htm) state
1.1.6 Airpoints Dollars earned on Itineraries involving only Air New Zealand Operated Qualifying Flights are calculated in accordance with the Airpoints Dollars Earned on
Air New Zealand Chart. Airpoints Dollars earned on Qualifying Flights that are a combination of Partner Airlines or Air New Zealand and Partner Airlines are calculated in accordance with the Partner Airline Earn Chart.

The decreased earning rate is seriously bad news. :( :td:
I'm also disappointed that flying LAX-LHR on NZ (as part of a combined itinerary) is going to yield me a whopping 35 A$, as does the LHR-JFK leg on UA.
On the other hand, if the NZ segments will actually start NZ earning rates even on a combined itin, it is beneficial to me -- 130 A$ on the AKL-LAX/LAX-AKL legs vs 105 A$, and also increased earning on the LAX-LHR leg....

From my reading NZ earning rates will apply for NZ metal regardless; however decreasing partner earning rate's is not a very wise move IMHO.
Just a note that i've added the special offers to the special offer's page in the NZ wiki (http://www.flyertalk.com/wiki/index.php/Category:Air_New_Zealand_Airpoints).
Also NZ don't operate a lounge in CNS, they're just noting that pax will no longer be able to use the QP there (whose idea was that ?)
They allocate an entire page to the AKL Domestic terminal (which barely affects most of the readers), but only put brief information wrt lounge changes on the back cover

Fares from Asia to Europe is no way cheaper than fares from NZ to Asia. Why on earth is the earning rate so different? I thought the Airbucks were based on fares. Actually I see airbucks is they can do whatever they want to control the earning rate where distance based programs can't. Now who says Airpoints is a more fair program?

Jun 29, 06, 3:03 pm
Airpoints is NZ-centric (airline and country). They figure most pax crediting to airpoints would be on through fares and NZ-London is less than double NZ-Asia/US hence the 2nd leg (LAX/HKG-LHG) earns less than the first leg (AKL-LAX/HKG).

The Domestic Lounges are Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. You are allowed to bring up to three guests there, using one pass for each guest.
The regional lounges are small, well I thought Nelson was big and Hamilton a closet. There is little monitoring of these lounges but you need to go to the check-in agent to get the code for the door.

I'm at HLZ at present in the new (?) temporary lounge in the new part of the terminal.
As per usual, checkin agent gives you the code, and directly in line from the Star Gold/Koru checkin counter - you walk past it as you check in.
30 seats; cheese & crackers; sandwiches; a little bit of tired looking fruit; biscuits; toast; tea/coffee/juice.

Have they started offering boarding calls in the temporary lounge yet ?Yes, they have. They invited us to board through the doors to the left of the checkin counter, opposed to having to walk to the old terminal (~30s walk, outside, albeit under marquees for cover) to board. Approx. 6 pax used the lounge for my flight, which seemed quite a bit for a Saab 340!
More annoying was the every 15 minutes, "bing bing BONG, please remember to not leave your luggage unattended", announcement. Very American!

I totally agree with you. I have changed my travel plans because of the changes to the partners, I dropped the ANZ flights and had them all on Thai where possible. I only credit my NZ domestic flights to Airpoints now with all others to Thai ROP although Asiana FFP may be interesting.
Either way I feel ANZ are stealing the money from their FF members, unless the other *A airlines have reduced the payment made to ANZ for Airpoints members flying on their aircraft, I do not know if this is a fact but I have not seen anything disputing this.

Just confirmed by Airpoints representative, partner earn rate from Australia to Asia will also be revised. Consider Airpoints completely useless for Star Alliance travelers.
Well, under the new earning scheme, Air NZ metal gets the Air NZ earning rate whether travel is solely on NZ or with other Star partners. So something like SIN-PER on SQ and PER-AKL NZ might still work out with the PER-AKL earning the usual NZ rate although SIN-PER on SQ earns the new reduced rate. However, I will probably use QF SIN-PER vv on separate tickets instead.
I have earned quite a bit of points on recent intra-region eg intra-Asian travels since my flights on TG were booked as Y. Right now I am just short of 28 points of requalifying for NZ*G after having attained it in June this year for the first time. I refuse to fly SQ Y (anyway SQ Y gets credited as discounted economy), so basically I had a lot of short-haul connections through BKK. Given the price of TG tickets ex-SIN, this works out to quite a nice airpoints earning/SGD spent ratio. Hopefully the intra-region earning rates for Star partners do not change. If Asia-America rates still remain unchanged, there are some nice opportunities of very high airpoints earning/SGD spent ratio on some of the partner Star airlines (not on SQ!)
BTW, I already have quotes from Air NZ regarding AKL-SIN via HKG fares after October with the HKG-SIN sector on UA, if AKL-HKG earns the normal Air NZ metal only rate irregardless of the connection to UA, this would be a nice airpoints earning opportunity especially if AKL-HKG is in PE or BP.

No TG does not have minimum mileage earning on NZ flights, flight to Hamilton direct gave me just under 300 miles, so I think the 12 Airpoint dollars per flight, is worth more, and the flight to Christchurch is about 130 miles.

I received the September Koru review today. A couple of interesting articles, ability to win tickets to follow the All Blacks etc.
But one thing caught my eye. On Page 5 - apart from Air NZ's view on what are the best seats in the premium cabins. Is a comment about Air NZs new flight to London.
Getting There
From 28 October, Air New Zealand will be flying to London via Hong Kong daily, with flights departing at 11:55pm.
Flights from London Heathrow Terminal 3 to Hong Kong and Auckland depart weekdays and Sunday at 5pm, and Saturdays at 6:30pm
These times differ from those in earlier announcements.
Everywhere I have looked (including Air NZ's web site) have the flight leaving London at 9:15pm (Saturday at 10:45pm).
Is it just bad editing? As it arrives in HKG at 5pm and 6:30pm - not leave London at these times. Or is there a real change so that it arrives into AKL earlier to catch the morning flights out to Australia?

This may be a silly question, but when NZ announces the dates that all flights will count towards status levels, will they allow any back-crediting? Or will it only apply for flights carried out from a specific date?
So for example lets say from 1 December 2008, all flights count towards status level. Will Air NZ allow an amnesty so that all flights from 1 November 2008 will also count towards status as well? It's just that I'd be annoyed if I flew a lot of flights just before they announced the change and wasn't credited for those seeing as how NZ have been hinting for ages at this new change but giving no exact date.

How much more would it cost them to text to the UK? (Or even across the ditch?)
Actually, with the "email to win" comps this time there was more than the usual zero on offer for non-NZ residents once the Ts&Cs are read.

I guess that this (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints_tc.htm#using) needs to be removed from the Airpoints T&Cs (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints_tc.htm) then:
3.2.3.1.7 We can't compensate you for a lack of airport lounge access, if your Air New Zealand Upgrade request isn't confirmed until your arrival at the departure gate. Baggage allowances will remain subject to the applicable fare and Service Class rules for your original ticketed Service Class.

Query
How come I don't get any of these offers in my in-box, I am Gold, just about to go GE?
I usually alternate between these status levels every year.
I've ticked the right boxes in my AP profile.
Maybe they are just for NZ residents only?
Be nice to see them.

Interesting choice of GE christmas gifts. Be sure to check out the "golden ticket" prize on each option on the website. It is rather slow to run though :(
After I picked my choice, and entered airpoints number & code, I didn't get a confirmation screen or email. Is that normal? I can't remember how it worked last year.

Yes, the "Fast Connection" version was rather slow. I used the "Slow Connection" version to claim my gift - although I thought the Phitek headphones might come in handy, I would end up losing them within six months, so I opted for the one appropriate to a latte liberal (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/10877731-post1.html), a term coined by mattyroo last year.
I was given the option to print my selection (I guess - but I didn't print so I don't quite know what would have been printed ... also not good for the carbon footprint ). And I received a prompt email acknowledgement.
Perhaps the "Fast Connection" let you down Kiwi Flyer.

Ok, what are the choices this year? Better have some idea before I call. Thanks.
Choices for me were
Powerstick - for powering up mobile phones and iPods.
A Dick Frizzell book - signed first edition hardback (will this be worth millions in the future?).
Make-a-wish Foundation donation.
Seedling Outdoor Kids gift - presumably for growing plants.
Phitek noise cancelling headphones.
First time as GE I've received a Christmas gift. The package came as an envelope that when opened all five "gifts" poped out as little carboad boxes. Caused few laughs at home when opening.

My Phitek headphones arrived today.
Similar in size to the Bose NC headset, the case is also of similar size.
Air NZ logo embossed on the case and on each ear piece. Colour is black.
Will compare with my Sennheiser NC headset late Jan on my next trip to Europe.
First gift as a GE, even though I have alternated G and GE for many years.
Appreciate the effort by NZ on keeping AUS customers loyal. There is lots of competition MEL/SYD-LAX, but its the NZ wine, flat BP beds, and the showers at LAX and AKL that keep me in NZ metal.
