US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - Can I upgrade two seats flying CLT to LGW, no status...

I read the sticky but I guess I am not that travel savvy, so can you all please answer this question...Hubby and I are flying to Gatwick from Charlotte and I have been reading here about buying upgrade certificates and using them to upgrade. But this is the first time we are flying US Air. So my question is, can I still buy the certificates and use them, even though I have not flown them before? I can alway join the Dividend program, and then get the credit card that would give me 10,000 points when I use it for my first purchase. We will be flying early Oct so I still have some time to arrange this.

Again, I might be asking questions which has been answered before, but I would really appreciate any answers you all can give me...

You can buy the certificates but be warned...with no status you are at the bottom of the food chain..all elites can be upgraded before you.

The 10K for the Visa will do little for you since a mileage upgrade is 30K each, each way. Also, again you will be at the bottom of the food cahin.

Now, if you buy an expensive Y/B ticket and then get a upgrade coupon valid for a Y/B ticket, you may be confirmed at time of ticketing. These tickets are usually 3x+ the low coach ticket.
