I just got an offer for a credit card in the mail.
Capital one offeres one mile for each dollar. Usable at 16 different airlines (DL, LH, UA, KLM, BA CO and more). However they do not give one aware for a mile but they use a LAPF factor (lowest Applicable Published Fare) and multiply by 80 the fare.
Example: lowest fare US$150 = 150x80=12k miles needed to redeem an award.
It does not seem to work for upgrades.
Any experiences?
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
DLH

Do you mean they don't have a set schedule for awards? Just by what the award cost in real dollars?

Yes, based on theloawst published fare.
They claim also that this is "proprietary to Capital One and subject to pending patent rights" ....
This is really good for a "cheap" flifgt which is very expensive last minute.
They also claim " there are no blackout dates, no seat restrictions and no advance booking requirements"
Is this too good to be true?
Well except for an upgrade of course ...

I have a Capitol One "Go Miles" card and it works the same way. You earn 1:1, and you redeem at 80 miles:$1. However, miles can be redeemed on any carrier. You have to pay for your trip w/ your CapOne card, then you apply for reimbursement. They credit your account with cash and remove miles from your kitty. As you noted, it is nice for low-$ trips.
Not sure about your upgrade question.

This is not SPAM topic
Let's send it to MilesBuzz!
I think we can get better responses in there.
Thanks

While I was initially skeptical of the Capital One GOmiles card, I have had good experiences (my SO has one).
He has redeemed the tickets with relative ease and you do accrue mileage for the tickets redeemed through Capital One. They actually use a travel agency in Boise, Idaho for their ticketing, Its called Carlson Wagoner I believe.
I know that the tickets are upgradeable usually but they were not upgradeable on NW using miles (I think because of the fare class purchased)
but normally these tickets are purchased using whatever fare class is available.
Its an interesting idea...
Hope it helps,

Are we talking about two different capital one cards?
One reimbursing you for what you paid based on 80/1 and one letting you
buy a last minute ticket on a plane at the lowest published fare at 80/1.
Do you get miles on the tickets?

It isn't the lowest available fare x 80%? Is it lowest fare in the market IF it were availabale? Thanks.

We got a Small Business Services Cap One (they seem to have a lot of products) and had nothing but hassles with billing. We pay all bills monthly through the company, but for some reason their bills never got there on time and they were hitting us for heavy fees (lots of money through the account at first). We had paid and mailed on time. We cannot pay electronically due to several entities paying same bill. We think they were holding checks a day or so to get the interest and fees.
We got all fees removed after fights, but stopped using the card. We wanted to cancel, but we would have lost about $9000 in credits. We were told we could transfer miles to any airline account after $10,000. We used it again and then tried to "move the miles" but they said you couldn't do that. Now they say you must have $25,000 to get one ticket (unclear as to those rules). Or, we can spend $20,000 and get $200 cash back or gift certificate from a merchant.
If the $25,000 for a domestic ticket is true, then it makes sense to use it till that point and buy a more expensive ticket with it.
Any wisdom here?

There are better cards out there....Starwood Amex, Diners Club, AA (with 15,000 mile bonus offer)
Actually, I would take just about anything over Capital One!

It's best to keep your account open even if you don't ever use it.

I think the problem is untrained phone reps... I have on the 80x card and have used it many time without any hassle. I even bought a ticket on Orbitz and was refunded for it (obviously I had to submit the electronic request).
Now here is the interesting part .. I used to have the 'MilesOne' card that basically was 18K for a short haul ticket, etc and you had to call them to redeem. One day about a year ago they sent me this new 'Go milles' that gave me all this 80x flexibility (basically same card number - just new plastic). I think you may still have the old card but the phone rep was probably giving you info on the new card.
As for the 9 and 10K requirement - I know that different people have different starting limits for redemption (i.e. you can do $50*80 = 4000K). I think the amount has to be 8-10K depending on your offer.
I think this is an awesome card ... pretty innovative and creative on Cap One's part. Finally one that I can use on the low fares .. I was getting tired of redeeming 18-25K for the same tickets that now cost less than $200 (*80 = 16K).

So they're trying to patent multiplication?

Capital One is pretty notorious for this type of billing crap. I currently have a class action suit pending against CapOne where I was just informed that CapOne has now admitted overbilling thousands of cardholders.
That being said, CapOne is pretty generous about issuing cards to people with less than perfect scores. CapOne also is the only major card issuer who continues to charge 1% for ForEx transactions (though query whether this will change in light of MBNA's recent move to up its fees).
As for Go Miles, etc., I think this program makes sense for people who don't want to use miles for upgrades or better yet flying international C or F. The most frequent complaints about this type of program relate to the required use of certain specified travel agencies, most of whom are incompetent at best. Does CapOne require use of a specific agency, or can you simply book online at the airline website of your choice?

I refuse to get a Capital One credit card just because of their stupid "pillager" commercials.
What's in my wallet?
NOT Capital One.

Yeah I heard about the suit. Thank god I'm not one of the thousands.. :D
I was reimbursed for an Orbitz purchase so I don't think you are limited to their travel agency but I'm not sure about the small business card.

Would like some clarification.
Does the 80x card mutliply using the lowest published fare (i.e. 100 roundtrip between cities A and B) or the lowest AVAILABLE published fare at the time of booking (for those same cities A and B, the 100 fare is not available, but a 250 fare is). So do you pay 100*80 or 250*80?
Thanks.

I believe it's the lowest available fare at the time of purchase. CapitalOne basically just buys the ticket. With the 80x multiplier, the card looks a lot like a 1.25% cash rebate card, but with the restriction that you must use your rebates on airline tickets. If one could get a 1.25% back card, what is the incentive to get a GoMiles card?

I'm pretty certain it's lowest available fare and it sounds like you purchase the ticket yourself and Capital One reimburses you in the form of a credit to your account. As the above poster mentioned, it really is more like a cash rebate card.

I agree with the post regarding the SPG AMEX. You can use the points for SPG stays or transfer to miles on several airlines.

Where this would make since is if you fly to destinations that are not costly. IE: Phoenix to ORd Usually only around 200..Less miles than the Spg I have.

This card from Cap One earns double miles everwhere except discount club stores. The miles needed to redeem free tickets is a little different at
125x(ticket cost) so a $100 ticket needs 12500 miles but you only have to spend $6250 for the free ticket. Still no annual fee. What do you guys think of this one???? :)
