I did a search but didn't find what I need. My friends' computer has stopped automatically playing a music CD or DVD movies. You know, you put one in, close it and it immediatly starts to play.

I have tried to find how to turn it back on but have come up empty handed. She is using XP. I searched the help menue in Windows and on Windows website. Either I am looking for the wrong thing or am just to dense to find it. .

I am sure the gurus here can give me a simple fix.

Thanks in advance!

Easier than you'd think:

Go to "my computer", right click on the CD/DVD and select the "autoplay tab"....

Is there a way to turn off autoplay for everything? I've tried turning it off from my computer, there does not seem a general solution. Removable drives seem a particular problem.

The registry. Run REGEDIT and go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\Cdrom

Doubleclick on "Autorun" on the right-hand side and change its value from 1 to 0.

After you reboot your machine will no longer automatically play any disk.

You should still be able to right-click on the CD drive in My Computer and have it autoplay a disk on demand.
