Asia - Sofitel Central Plaza too far from airport?

I noticed this hotel is listed as an airport hotel, however, I have read in another thread that it takes around 30 min to get there from BKK. If that's correct, we might as well stay somewhere in the city for a similar price.

I haven't seen any reviews of this place on FT, so don't know whether it's any good. It looks quite nice though and should definitely beat the Comfort Suites where we stayed last time and almost left after seeing the room (it was just too late to argue with them). The other option would be the Miracle Grand, but I'd prefer the Sofitel because I found a US$64 rate at asiarooms.com.

I have stayed at this hotel many times. It really shouldnt take 30 minutes to get to that hotel, you can be there in 15 as the hotel is right next to the tollway. Sometimes the traffic entering the tollway form the hotel is a pain but still once they get on the tollway it is not long at all to get to the airport. Now, with BKK traffic you can always get a snag 15 minutes was always the norm for me. I was surprised to see it listed as a hotel property also but its convenience is probably why it is listed.

If I had to choose from any of the hotel properties or this one, this one would win hands down. The property is a solid 3 star property and I am sure by now it is a little worn but I cant imagine it has always been a clean hotel and pretty much all standard rooms in BKK hotels are the same so you will get about the same thing anyplace else has. The coffee shop/restaurant is open 24 hours and the prices are reasonable. The bar/lounge is friendly and rarely too busy but a nice bar. Central department store and the shopping mall are connected via the car park to the hotel and are the only thing within walking distance of the hotel. In the shopping mall you will find plenty of shopping and restaurants especially if you have a short stay. The subway is also just on the other side of the shopping center so if you need to go elsewhere that is at your disposal although it is a bit of a walk to get there. For a quick turn around (less than like 10 hours) this hotel would be where I would stay.

Now, if you are staying for a longer time period I would just head to sukhumvit as there are more things at your disposal including some cheaper hotels.

Hope this helps, but in short I think you will be fine at this hotel.

I am not sure what times you'll be travelling from/to the airport but be aware that this hotel is located at a major intersection (Lad Pro & Pahonyothin) where there is currently a major construction project on going. In the best of times this intersection is pretty bad but with many lanes closed for the construction of overpasses everyone is being warned to find alternative routes. Taxis might be able to circumvent this as the hotel is on the north or airport side of the intersection?

transpac is right. lad prao is a nightmare. If you have time to spare, you have found a great deal. but it could take some time to get there.

Confirm, without traffic in front of the hotel, it should not take more than 15 min.

Thanks, guys. Booked it for US$63 for next week and I'm sure it'll be all right.

Just a note. The area near this hotel at the moment and perhaps for the next few months is a traffic jam area due to the construction of the new parts of the flypass. Just beware when you are staying there.. During the day till evening perhaps better use the public transprt to go to the city...
