Practical Travel Safety Issues - FAA and airlines have done nothing?

Recently saw something, perhaps on Lou Dobb's program, stating that the FAA had ordered the airlines to correct the wiring problems that caused the TWA 800 disaster off Long Island in 1996 and that nothing has been done by any of them. The planes now in the works are not supposed to have the same problem but the FAA isn't following through on its job. I don't think that this type of fuel tank explosion has happened since but...

You're assuming it was the wiring that did it. I know that's the official reason, but there are folks (http://www.twa800.com/index.htm) out there who think otherwise.

If it wants to, the FAA can issue directives & such to force the airlines to fix the problem (or stop flying the planes, period). I don't know the details of the current situation, but the FAA certainly is in a position to force compliance if they wish.
