Looking for the best wap sites for traveling ...

Right now I use mobile.alaskaair.com to help me check flight status on AS. I'm wondering if there are any other wap sites out there that will better help me with flight status for other airlines?

Here are some other sites I use personally:

http://mobile.yahoo.com

Great thread. ^

Here is what i have setup for my tagtag.

http://wireless.nwa.com
http://wap.oa.yahoo.com/ -> Main yahoo site with links to weather,movies,mail etc
http://wap.sportsline.com -> espn gets hammered a lot so cbs is much faster for scores.
http://wireless.mapquest.com/wml/ -> wap mapquest
http://www.superpages.com/ -> Very very handy (yes its wap also)
http://wap.hollywood.com/#TimesTixZip -> Movie timings

A very cool thing to do is open an account on tagtag. ( www.tagtag.com) and create your own wap page where you add all your favorite wap links.
so on your phone you basically access www.tagtag.com/mywebpage and access all these cool wap sites by just browsing so you dont have to type anything after you have created your links.

Thanks all - so there is no all encompasing WAP site that checks flight status - so i don't have to go to a specific carrier's wap site, i can just go to the all encompasing site?

Thanks

I could not get a specific plane's graphics page to show, on my BlackBerry. I could drill down to the page before it (i.e. United 757 P.S.).

In reality I wouldn't have expected any graphics to show on my hacked BB 3.7 browser. However I would surmise that an html implemented BB 4.0 browser would show the graphics.

It works great on my Dell Axim PDA, even when connecting over GPRS.

From the seatguru website:

Have you ever wanted to switch your seat at the airport or wanted to know what in-flight services would be available on your flight, but weren't near a computer to access SeatGuru.com? With the launch of Mobile SeatGuru you'll be able to access content from SeatGuru.com - wherever you are!

Mobile SeatGuru is a version of the website that is optimized for handheld devices. This new version of the site simply requires a device with an HTML capable browser such as the popular BlackBerry 7000 series, TREO, Dell Axim, HP iPAQ, or various advanced mobile phones. This service is free! Just visit the following website from your PDA: http://mobile.SeatGuru.com

Though you'll still need to visit the site for the full breadth of seat comments, Mobile SeatGuru includes the following features to help travelers on the go:

*Coverage of 23 domestic and international airline carriers and 200 aircraft.
*Seat map graphics with color-coding.
*Seat Pitch and Width measurements.
*In-flight entertainment and Power Port availability.
*Location of Power Ports and adapter type.

The Mobile SeatGuru version covers all the domestic and international airlines found on SeatGuru.com and will be updated to reflect any changes that are made to the SeatGuru.com site to ensure that the information provided is always current and accurate.

We welcome any feedback or questions you may have about this new service: help@seatguru.com. As we receive a high volume of emails, please be patient if you require an answer from the Helpdesk.

Stretch your legs, recline and enjoy!

like Craig6z, i can drill down to the various aircraft links but my issue is that i get an error message saying the graphics are too large to draw for the individual a/c. i guess that's what i get for having a phone w/not enough memory (nokia 6200).......

Since there's no free wi-fi at MHT, I decided to see if any of the availability tools work on my Nokia 6820 and the Optimal Move tool did - http://www.optimalmove.com/flyertalk/galileo.html - seeing that DL was Y0 made me be first in line to get a 200.00 bump yesterday. It takes a lot longer than it does otherwise and search dual connections made my cell phone freeze - however, single point-to-point connects (which you should be checking anyways) works fine.

I came across this very interesting thread via Google and, as I'm a wap developer, was wondering how much interest there would be if I set up a wap site which included these links, plus other important travel/business wap sites. There are many great sites, but they're not easy to find! I'm happy to check the urls (I believe that BA's has changed already) and would really appreciate any comments/feedback on my idea.
Thanks,

Inspired by this thread, I am pleased to announce Go With Rob - a new wap site especially for all YOU flytalkers with phones! It’s simple, easy and FREE to use! It includes links to the best travel wap sites, and is a one-stop shop for all the major airlines’ wap sites (as discussed on this thread). And, by focusing just on travel info, you can get what you want, when you want it.

So, for lots of travel information (including some must-have phone numbers), bookmark on your phone http://tagtag.com/gowithrob

I’d also like you to tell me what YOU want. It’s your wap site and it's ready to grow, so please email your comments and/or suggestions to Rob at hl007a8624@blueyonder.co.uk

"Before you check in, check out Go With Rob!"

(Please note that Go With Rob is currently in a beta stage of development and therefore includes tagtag advertising. It is free to access and use during this trial stage, however operator charges may still apply.)

My company as part of its divestiture from a Fortune 200 parent, recently outsourced their BlackBerry Enterprise server and Lotus Notes email hosting. As part of this process, all BB users had to re-format and re-activate their devices.

Well this was like a magic event for my 7290. Suddenly I can access multiples more websites then under the old server structure, and the graphics are far improved ^ . While FT worked OK previously, now it looks better and runs faster. Most other sites I visited before and now, are way better from a graphics and speed standpoint. I have a sneaky feeling our old parent company had dumbed down our BlackBerry service, for their own self-centered reasons.

P.S. Of course United's horrid WAP site is still as useless is in the past :td: .

Yes, the only site anyone should really go to with their WAP browser is http://mini.opera.com. Then, download the browser, and you'll be able to visit nearly any web site. It's fast, doesn't use too much data, and is configurable. I regularly visit nearly all the same sites I can on my computer (I use T-Mobile's $5.99 unlimited internet plan on a Sharp 3G/GSM phone).

Yes, the only site anyone should really go to with their WAP browser is http://mini.opera.com. Then, download the browser, and you'll be able to visit nearly any web site. It's fast, doesn't use too much data, and is configurable.And does not work on Vodafone :(

Ah...too bad about the Vodafone...are you in the UK? Actually, I roam regularly on the Vodafone Japan network (now Softbank) with my unlocked Vodafone-branded phone (Sharp 903). The roaming rates for email are far lower than the calling rates..

try http://plusmo.com/ - been using it for a while, first on my moto v551 and now on my bb8700c. I love the cricket app of course (note my handle); but their main app is pretty awesome - i use it as my web-to-go, kind of an avantgo that really works for the general consumer. The images and slideshows are really nifty.

is anyone else having trouble with http://www.faa.gov/wireless/

the main link works but the airport delays link (http://www.faa.gov/wireless/delays.cfm#index) either comes up with a page not found error or a static faa page.

I e-mailed the FAA on 11/12. They responded today:

Please visit our website at http://www.fly.faa.gov/ais/jsp/ais.jsp

Here is where you can resubscribe to receive delay information by cell phone.

Unfortunately, this is just a web site where you can get text messages about delays at airports you specify from a list. It's not the same as the web site.

I'm going to respond that this really isn't helpful. Seldom do I fly into the same airport.

A word of advice:

Be sure to backup your phone (or if you are like me, keep a backup list) with all of your favorite WAP addresses.

I recently changed phones and lost all the wap listings because I could not launch the internet browser on the old phone after service was disconnected.
Still trying to track down a few favorites - without this FT thread I would surely be up a creek! :)

Bostonians who use Treos or other Palm smartphones can download schedules and maps of commuter trains, busses, ferries, and the Harvard shuttle directly into their phones at http://www.secondkiss.com/mbta. The commuter train map is especially cool on a Treo.

Also, Palm and Windows Mobile users can download a version of Google Earth specifically for their mobile devices. Using Google Earth on a Treo is amazing! Go to http://www.google.com/gmm and look at the bottom of the page.

In addition to mobile.flightstats.com, you can get FlightStats flight status information from other sources as well. You can enter your flight number into the "one search" box on m.yahoo.com. You can do the same on mobile.google.com. You can text your flight number to 466453 (Google) and get your flight status back as a text message in a few seconds. You can also just dial up 1-800-flights to access a really great voice automation system. All will give you FlightStats data.

I was in an airport during a blizzard the other day and wanted to rent a car immediately. Rather than walk up to every car rental desk in search of the best deal I wanted to find the best deal online so from my Motorola Q phone I tried to access a mobile site for Travelocity - I found their rudimentary site but I didn't see a feature that would actually let me make a reservation , I then tried Orbitz and finally Expedia and still no luck. Anyone know of a good mobile link for any/all of the above?

I'm disappointed no one has listed a site to look up the lowest gas prices in a given area.

How about http://www.gasbuddytogo.com, it's a mobile version of gasbuddy.com, or your local variation with a city or state in the URL, www.phillygasprices.com, www.pennsylvaniagasprices.com.

MSN Autos has a mapped price listing (http://autos.msn.com/everyday/GasStations.aspx?m=1&l=1&zip=00001&x=12&y=7), but no mobile version that I can see. Same for MapQuest, they have a regular version (http://gasprices.mapquest.com/) but no mobile version. Any price listing using Google's Maps seem to be abandoned, wish someone had that for mobile usage.

Edit: Update, MapQuest does have a gas price look up, go to main www.MapQuest.com site on mobile device, server switches you to mobile version, and they have a link to gas price look up.

Great thread. ^

Here is what i have setup for my tagtag.

http://wireless.nwa.com
http://wap.oa.yahoo.com/ -> Main yahoo site with links to weather,movies,mail etc
http://wap.sportsline.com -> espn gets hammered a lot so cbs is much faster for scores.
http://wireless.mapquest.com/wml/ -> wap mapquest
http://www.superpages.com/ -> Very very handy (yes its wap also)
http://wap.hollywood.com/#TimesTixZip -> Movie timings

Thanks for the good tip. Will make life easier for me :)
