Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - Confused about Earning

View Full Version : Confused about Earning

The Asiamiles.com site says that any flights on AA earn a minimum of 100 percent earning. However, the Cathay USA site seems to imply that there are certain fare classes which qualify for only half. Who is correct?

Also, do AA flights earn a minimum of 100 percent for the purposes of qualifying for MPC status separate from Asiamiles?

Thank you for your help.

Hi letaPlamiB, I suspect your confusion is due to the statement "Discounted Economy Class: 50% of actual miles flown" on this page (http://www.cathay-usa.com/freqfly/earnasiamiles.asp). If you click on the link in the footnote, however, you'll see that no paid AA fare falls under the Discounted Economy category. So, paid AA fares should get 100% Asiamiles equal to the miles flown.

Also, do AA flights earn a minimum of 100 percent for the purposes of qualifying for MPC status separate from Asiamiles?

MPC status is based either on Asiamiles earned (assuming you've enrolled in MPC) or on MPC sectors. Given that AA fares earn 100% miles, they should earn 100% MPC sectors, which, in addition to the appropriate cabin bonus, will then count towards MPC status.

If I've committed any error in my advice, the experts of this forum will correct me.

Almost correct - just a minor point. Status is based on MPC miles or sectors, not Asiamiles. Whilst for the most part they are the same for flights flown, there can be differences eg CX did a promotion recently with 2 for 1 Asiamiles in Y. A HKG-TPE flight in Y would in that case earn 501 MPC miles, but 1002 Asiamiles.

Another point to add to my knowledge of MPC rules. Thanks, Meerkat. ^

And just to be clearer still, there are some AA subclasses which do not earn AsiaMiles. The list on the AsiaMiles site here: http://www.asiamiles.com/en/earn/airlines/partners/1,,118602,00.html lists those that earn. But subclasses not listed (e.g. O) do not earn, and Q does not earn for tickets booked in Europe.

Thanks for the correction, christep. :) It was too easy for me to overlook omitted AA fare classes from the AsiaMiles list because the list looked so comprehensive (esp. compared to the list they provided for BA). :o
