Although this fare sale has been listed for a week, I haven't been able to find availability until today in T and I snagged a same day SFO/IAD flight on 7/3.

I do intend to try for standby on the earlier outbound flight.

AA.com did the same to me, and when I called they said it was an invalid connection. I thought the websites weren't supposed you allow you to do that? I guess not. Hope you got your running shoes :D

In this case (UA SFO-IAD, IAD-SFO), IAD is not a connecting city. It's a destination city, so minimum connection times do not apply. The minimum stay (none) of the fare applies.

Thanks keithguy now it makes sense. I imagine missing the return flight would be treated as if I just missed my flight, i.e. my fault.

I saw a similar problem yesterday on the SFO/MSP fares. There was only 4 minutes between landing time and take off time on that one.

Also the outbound flight (SFO-IAD) may be early, depending on the winds.

united.com spit it out like that.

Make sure to check availability for the later return flights. I think there are two flights after that one going back to SFO. The 9:45PM one is usually wide open.
