I received one for Elite status with the Shangri-la's Golden Circle frequent guest programme, acknowledging my Diamond status with Marco Polo Club.
If I am not mistaken, this is the top-tier elite and comes with quite generous benefits. Valid through 31 Dec. 2006.
A nice offer, indeed.

Is this unsolicited and targetted or what? I was Elite several years ago and it was great... haven't been using Shang's so much recently so dropped back to "Classic". :(

I do not recall making any soliciations :p
I found it in my mailbox a few days ago. It just said to the effect that we are sending this invitation because you are a Diamond member. It was in English, so i would think it was not targeted at the Japan market.
In my three or so years as Diamond, this is the first invitation for elite status with a hotel programme.
8 a.m. early check-in, 6 p.m. late checkout, suite upgrades, breakfast, lounge access etc. for 18 months .....

It came in snail mail. Not 'automatic' in the sense that it did not come with a Diamond package.

Good to hear ^ Is a suite upgrade common?

Not just a suite but always airport transfer and other extras. To make Elite I am told you need something like 30 nights at over the year at 3 different properties. All I know is that it took a letter to Hong Kong to get my status and that is after paying for 300 nights in less than three years. ;)

I've only been elite for 1.5 yrs but never knew you could get airport transfers as part of the elite benefits (certainly not a listed benefit). I usually stay on what they consider their "value rate" which includes airport transfers, laundry etc
Suite upgrades are very common for me (close to 90% of the time). Generally a very worthwhile status for those travelling in Asia.
