Qantas Frequent Flyer - Qantas "Do not congregate around front toilet" message on domestic

Flew back to Bris on Sat night on a 737 domestic trip.

On boarding the CM went through the usual spiel. While I know they ab-lib and add things in sometimes, this CM added in something like "Due to the current security concerns, you are not allowed to congregate around the front toilet area. I hope you understand in this current security heightened environment"

Have never heard that before on a Qantas domestic flight.

Is this now standard practice? Was the CM just wanting people to not congregate around the front staff area :)

Looks like the US is attempting to reduce its trade deficit by exporting its inSecurity stupidity.

My apologies and condolences. :(

The right question to ask is 'who would want to cause harm to Bris Vegas? ;)

I was once part of a group told to resume their seats when congregating around the rear toilets of a QF 747 - but that was only because the crew were having trouble trimming the plane.

Well I was flying over Melbourne at the time... :)

Of course the CSM never mentioned it again. Maybe the threat dissipated as soon as we went past the VIC and NSW borders ;)

Being a 737, perhaps it was to preserve the amenity of the J cabin? IOW, they don't mind you congregating, just do it in the WHY cabin rather than the J cabin?????

In all seriousness, it is a security measure, even if many would argue a pointless/silly one. Was widely discussed by FAA, US and other security agencies etc etc after 9/11, and all US airlines have official, published policy to this effect (and make announcements about it on flights), designed to stop 'bad guys' being able to get together in a group on a flight etc. Any serious terrorist would not be needing to meet his collegues on a plane to be able to carry out their plans however - and such get-togethers did not happen on any of the 9/11 flights - so why they believe this will make a flight safer is not certain.

SBS TV, The World News, July 1, 2004:

“The U.S. Transportation and Security Administration has issued a new directive which demands pilots make a pre-flight announcement banning passengers from congregating in aisles and outside the plane’s toilets. The directive also orders flight attendants to check the toilets every two hours for suspicious packages.”

All airlines have had to look at it, and I have once been told not to queue on QF. Here is a piece on it re. Qantas -

Toilet queuing ban requires tact: Anderson (http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/01/07/1073437336557.html?oneclick=true)

On a lighter note, maybe airlines will change the policy if further incidents like this occur !!! :D - PEESYJET-BAN (http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/content_objectid=14037914_method=full_siteid=89488 _headline=-PEESYJET-BAN-name_page.html)

The 9/11 comission was a joke. Those clowns couldn't secure a paper sack.

About the only thing they seem to is slick sales agents, for the folks at Qantas seem to have bought into this stupid scam.

I was on a QF LAX/SYD flight recently and was mildly amused when before takeoff the first officer announced something along the lines of "Due to FAA regulations we have to advise you that congregating around the lavatories is prohibited. But once we're out of US airspace, they can't touch us, so go right ahead". I was suitably impressed.

My last flight to US soil we got the same "faux deadpan" announcement, and half the pax upstairs burst into laughter. Later on, a few of us congregated at the back of the upstairs cabin for some Charles Heidseck instead. The FAs happily catered for us.

Didn't get a 'don't congregate around the toilets' announcement when I flew CBR-BNE on tuesday (28/6/05) but did get an announcement from the CSM that ' toilets are located at the rear of the aircraft for Economy guests and at the front of the aircraft for Business Class guests'. Methinks he had been flying Vermin himself!!

Cheers :)
