I have 4 days, 3 nights in Bali, where should I go? I mostly want to shop, relax on the beach and maybe check out a cultural sight or two. I'm looking for a town with a good mix of these 3 things. Priority 1 is probably the shopping. I don't have a lot of money to stay in a resort, I'm probably gonna stay in a guesthouse/hostel or maybe a cheap hotel. Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Okay it's between the following,
Kuta
Legian
and Ubud
What does everyone think?
Ubud for shopping and great spas- but the beach is at least an hour away.

How's the nightlife in Ubud?

When I went to Ubud last November, the town (the whole island for that matter of fact) was pretty deserted - not too many tourists. We didn't see any happening night spots, and the restaurants were also mostly empty.
That said, I do recommend Ubud (we did travel a bit in Bali - went as far north as Lovina, as far east as Candidasa, and far south as Nusa Dua/Ulu Watu. Shopping at Ubud was great, restaurants were a treat (especially the local speciality, suckling pig!), and the view of the rice paddies was awesome.
We also stayed at the Tegal Sari hotel - highly recommended! I believe we paid $35 or so a night, and got a beautiful room w/plenty of character, great view of the rice paddies, and a yummy breakfast delivered to our balcony as well!
Enjoy your trip to the Island of the Gods!

With only a short time I would recommend Tuban all the other places are nice as mentioned, I have a timeshare in Bali and have a few extra days out with my weeks it due to flights. We stayed a couple of times at the Hotel Jatra in Tuban, the hotel is nice but basic, it has a rooftop pool and is ten minutes form Kutu square and the new shopping complex, the beach is app 5-10 minutes depending on what part you want to go to. I think we paid app $35per night.

If you want nightlife, stay in Kuta, Legian, or Seminyak. Ubud shuts down early. You can easily stay for less than USD20 a night in any of these places.
In Seminyak, you can try the Sarinande Beach Inn -- 62-361-730383. About USD20 per night. They also offer free airport pickup. They are located 1 minute walk behind the Sofitel's beachfront property and have a nice-enough pool. Seminyak has an older crowd than Kuta. The beach is hit or miss though depending on the time of the year.
Personally, I prefer Ubud.

With only 4 days, better stay in Ubud. You can find some nice and cheap place to stay. Kuta and Legian are quite crowded, you can also find cheap one in Kuta but not as much cultural thing to see compare to Ubud.

For night life I would stay in Seminyak. More up-market and exiting places than in Kuta. Dhyana Pura Street in Seminyak is the place in the evening/night (especially if you are gay) and on the beach front. Try Double Six and De-ja-vu right on the beach; you wouldn't be disappointed with these great clubs.
For shopping I would go to Kuta during the day.
Sarinande Beach Inn is all right, friendly staff, great value. Pool too small and breakfast very simple. Conveniently located for going out in Seminyak in the evening. Last summer the rates were around 220.000 IDR
For a more up market and nicer place, try out Bali Holiday Resort, right on the beach in Seminyak (next to Double Six). Great breakfast and pool. Free airport transfer if you ask. Rate was 450.000 IDR (bungalow) but depending on your negotiating skills and availability, you could stay for 350.000 IDR. Then it is great value. Rooms at the main building are cheaper.
